Thread: Boston Marathon Handcycles Question

    Question Boston Marathon Handcycles Question

    Does anyone know how a person goes about qualifying for and entering the Boston Marathon with a handcycle? When I go to their website I see qualifying times for push rim wheelchairs but I don't see anything related to the hand crank wheelchairs. At the same time the old results page lists a handcycle division and competitors finish times so they're obviously competing and being timed (as of the 2009 race anyway).

    Just want to see if it's something I have a realistic shot at qualifying for next year or what the deal is exactly. Thanks in advance!

    I don't know a real lot about it but I do know that one of the races I do every year (the Burlington Vermont Marathon) is a qualifying event for the Boston Marathon. I think also as I remember that the Handcycle division is always just an exhibition event in the Boston Marathon.

    I think I read something about handcycles beeing prohibited from running the Boston Marathon. Something related to high speed descents and accidents. Is it true?

    I´m trying to run the NYC Marathon this year...

    There's no "Handcycle Division" listed. If you've seen it, though, it might be an exhibition event and might be fun. You should call.

    They definitely allow handcycles, issue official bibs and keep track of the time. I do not know if the handcycle division is strictly exhibitional at this point or even if they award phrize money and medals, etc....but handcycles are in the race.

    I put in an email to one of their contact addresses to see how they do things. I'll post the response on here when I hear back for anyone else who is thinking of doing the race some day.

    Not sure if this also applies to wheelchair and handcycling participants but I guess it's getter bigger and more competative;
