    Urethroplasy ? for Nurses...

I went to see my Uro today for a regular checkup and asked him about a urethroplasty, in place of my Mitrofanoff (not happy with the Mitro, but that's a whole other thread). Anyway, he said yes, he could do a urethroplasty, but it wouldn't hold up to the irritation of the catheter and would have to do redo the urethroplasty probably every 5 yrs. Is this true or BS? Any other thoughts on the urethroplasty would be greatly appreciated.

It's hard to answer that question without knowing why you would need a urethroplasty in the first place, and why you have a mitroffanoff. If he says he can't give you a repaired urethra that will be a long term solution, you probably don't want him doing the surgery on you. Urethral repair is a specialty subset of urology, and there are some regionally and nationally recognized experts. For the general urologist, unless a lot of their practice includes urethral repair, they may be less confident in their ability to give you the best possible surgical outcome.

If you are determined to pursue this further, you may want to get a referral for a second opinion from a trauma/pelvic reconstruction specialist.

He actually specializes in reconstructive urological surgeries. He also said he would do it if I wanted, but it would probably need to be done every 5 years or so. I was hoping to hear if what he was saying about it not being as strong was correct or not.

I have not heard that before, but perhaps this is his experience. If you want to check it out further, I would recommend a second opinion.
