Thread: What's your Internet speed

  1. #51
i went to optonline boost, cable btoadband. it is supposed to be arounf 30msgd dl and 5 up.
whenit dropd under 20 megs for any amount of time i call ina trouble, i am upo to the engineer level now.
    i try oet 30/5

i am faster than n any of the fios in this area andia m on cable.

if you go to dslr reports you can keep a record of your test and see how you compare to others in your area, by zip and or by broadband, most people don't test. most people re getting ripped off in my area, they get qabout half of what they pay for
if your on any service the only valid test is before your router, at the cable modem output
dslr reports is the most tech available for broadband, i have been using it for over 15 years.
for cell phones and cell phone carriers, howard forums is the mist informative,
we shouls start a thread on the best forums for tech stuff.

These speed tests measure the time it takes to download and upload a certain number of characters from your machine to one server (a testing computer owned by the speed test provider). To get a reasonable estimate of your local provider's speed, you should really try different servers. By default, the speed test program picks a server it thinks is near to you based on your machine's internet address.

For example, when I run the speedtest.net using the default server in Miami (50 miles away), I get:

But, when I direct speedtest.net to use a server in north Florida (300 miles away) I get:

When I use http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ , it agrees with the latter test going to an Atlanta server (600 miles).

khmorgan, your n. FL test is not posted. However, your results from Miami are unusual. Usually the download speed is considerably faster than the upload speed, but yours are reversed. ???

Can't complain either about my speed.
The local hub building deal is up the street,
and this box is connected to a router through
a 50ft ethernet cable that I had to splice together because one of
our dogs thought it was a chew toy lol.
At one point I hosted two domains, several subdomains,
with two boxes accessing data and Ice browsing on her Wii
    the speed was reasonable.
Then again, on the client side- our sites were probably slow..

Huh? Not sure what you mean about the N. FL test not being posted. I see it. Am I the only one?

As for the reversed upload / download speed, that was my point -- sort of. Computer networks can vary in speed depending on load, path, errors, etc. Sometimes traffic flows faster than usual in one direction than in the other -- much like a highway (besides the fact that Comcast intentionally slows upload to keep people from setting up their own commercial servers).

So, if your Internet is running slow, it might shed some light on the problem by trying a different server or tool.

It is there now. I swear it was not when I originally read your post. I have never experienced the radical difference like your tests show.
