What is going on in Haiti is heartbreaking. I think texting the word Haiti to 90999 is a great way of donating ten dollars to a reputable organization. Apparently the scum of the earth has been busy in the last 48 hours setting up bogus relief organizations and fraudulent websites, so giving money directly to the Red Cross makes a lot of sense. The contruction there is so shody, so totally lacking in rebar in the cement that the buildings had no earth quake resistence, although with a quake of this magnitude I don't know if better built buildings would have fare much better. The lack of water is going to be the next part of the disaster in the next 24 hours unless some agency's figure out how to make and distribute it very quickly before mass dehydration starts taking a toll.

Things don't change, the poor and rich have been here since the beginning of time.

Haiti.*** This is official from the Red Cross- here is their website.
The cost is charged to your phone bill.

does anybody know if this works in other counties or is it just the US?

edit to add: apparently doesn't work in Canada That is very unfortunate because it seems an ideal way to target people who don't normally donate but would if all they had to do was text.

Canadians looking to donate money to Red Cross disaster relief in Haiti through text messages may want to try other options.
Twitter users are reporting that text-donation campaigns on the social-media website are not applicable in Canada.
One option, where texting the word "Haiti" to 90999 results in a $10 donation to the Red Cross and a matching fee being applied to the user's cellphone bill, only works in the United States, users reported.

God bless them. They're in my prayers. Hard to fathom what they're living. So sad.

Kiran's link works fine for Canadians.

Yes but I wasn't talking about credit card donations. I was referring specifically to the cell phone text donation program set up by the American Red Cross.

Anyways that aside, a friend just passed on a link to Plan Canada and they apparently have just set up a text program that takes a $5 donation. However it didn't work for me using the Bell network so I am not sure if the system has a bug or is overloaded or what.

I have yet to send a text message. Ever. Does that make me old?

Crap ... just tried it too. Thanks for clarifying this OJ ... you can donate right online and specify that you would like it to go to the Haiti fund. Doing that right now: https://www.paypaq.com/redcross/new/index.php
Roses are red. Tacos are enjoyable. Don't blame immigrants, because you're unemployable.
