Miep Gies, Anne Frank protector, dies at 100

My heart is so deeply heavy having read this news. Rest in peace, Ms. Gies. Just another reminder that we will not forget.

(CNN) -- Miep Gies, who ensured the diary of Anne Frank did not fall into the hands of Nazis after the teen's arrest, has died. She was 100.

Gies was among a team of Dutch citizens who hid the Frank family of four and four others in a secret annex in Amsterdam, Netherlands, during World War II, according to her official Web site, which announced her death Monday. She worked as a secretary for Anne Frank's father, Otto, in the front side of the same Prinsengracht building.

The family stayed in the secret room from July 1942 until August 4, 1944, when they were arrested by Gestapo and Dutch police after being betrayed by an informant. Two of Gies' team were arrested that day, but she and her friend, Bep Voskuijl, were left behind -- and found 14-year-old Anne's papers.

I can't even imagine what life was like for Jews then. HOW WAS THAT ALLOWED TO HAPPEN?

What an amazing life she led, and how sad that this witness to history has passed. She represents the very best of human nature.

Apathy from the outside world. Along with 6 million Jews, 5 million others were murdered for different reasons under Nazi standards. Before enacting the Final Solution, the Nazis were putting the disabled to death. If you ever do research on the subject, you'll find ads that told the German population that keeping the sick and disabled alive wasn't worth the taxes.

Example: Nazi propaganda below. A quick translation: "60,000 Reichsmarks is what this born-disabled man costs the peoples' community during his lifetime. People's comrades, this is your money. Read "New People", the monthly magazine of the race-politics bureau of the National Socialist German Workers' Party"

Thanks for the link, Todd, but I have to pass. It is not apathy on my part, but it makes me so sad, my heart aches. I need to stay up right now. Thinking about Miep Gies , and knowing her goodness is easier to think about.

Unfortunately, anti-Semitism was rampant in many parts of the world at that time, not just in Germany and the countries occupied by Germany. If the Nazis had been persecuting and exterminating only Christians, there would have been a bigger outcry. As it was, they were primarily exterminating Jews, people with disabilities, Gypsies, gays, and other groups who were stigmatized by many nations at that time and who had little political power or support.

... many parts of the world including our own. Quite a number of very important people in the USA were sympathetic to many of Hitler's ideas (notably Henry Ford and Charles Lindbergh). And Hitler by no means was the first. Antisemitism goes back to the Crusades, and many centuries before. The principle involved (not just antisemitism, but anti-anything different) is probably as old as mankind - it's built into all of us, and we have to use our intelligence to consciously fight it. A very few extremely courageous people like Miep Gies are willing to put their lives on the line in that fight.
