Thread: Walk N Roll Marathon!!

    Talking Walk N Roll Marathon!!

Each year, I raise money for spinal cord injury research in the hope that one day I’ll kick this wheel chair to the curb and dance again. My belief grows stronger each day that we are on the cusp of a viable treatment for our injuries.

Training has started for this year’s Rock N Roll marathon. Last year I completed the half marathon (13.1 miles) in less than 4 hours. Not bad for pushing a 50 pound wheel chair “uphill in both directions.” Together we raised more than $6,000. Thank you for your generous support.

I plan to take it a step further. Two actually. Not only will I be faster this year, I have committed to crossing the finish line ON MY FEET! This will be one of the most satifying days I’ve had since my injury.

After last year’s event I discovered trace movements in my legs. With good fortune and hard work, I’ve turned that movement into something usable. I am training right now to be able to walk those 2 beautiful steps on my own power with a walker. Coming on the heels of a 13.1 mile half marathon, this will be quite a test of my focus and determination. I think of the research and the fundraising as a marathon too; nothing’s going to happen in a sprint but with focus, determination, hard work and luck, we WILL see our treatment.

You were so generous in your support last year; I hope you’ll be able to support us this year too. Our donation link is http://jenlongdon.chipin.com/team-walk-n-roll. All proceeds go to the Reeve Irvine Research Center through the 501(c)3 organization, Research for Cure. Your donations are tax deductible.

If you’ll be in Phoenix on January 17, 2010, please consider signing up to join us. We also hope to have a lot of cheerleaders along the course, so please come out and wave a sign and cheer your head off. You’ll also find Team Walk N Roll on facebook.

Exceptionally cool team T-Shirts will be available, at $25 plus $2.50 s&h if I need to mail it, please order one.

If you’ve not visited the Reeve Irvine website, here’s the link to learn more about all the exciting research underway

"I will not die an unlived life. I will not live in fear of falling or catching fire. I choose to inhabit my days, to allow my living to open me, to make me less afraid, more accessible, to loosen my heart until it becomes a wing, a torch, a promise. I choose to risk my significance; to live so that which comes to me as seed goes to the next as blossom and that which comes to me as blossom, goes on as fruit."

Congratulations Jen. I'll bet you do it. I would go right with you but I don't handle hills very well and I'm still mostly in bed so I can't train. But I'm almost healed.

Make the best out of today because yesterday is gone and tomorrow may never come. Nobody knows that better than those of us that have almost died from spinal cord injury.

Good luck JenJen! I am going to miss the event by a couple of days. We are flying through Phoenix Jan. 20 and 31. Haven't been to Sky Harbor since 1987. Keep up the good work.
