remember red valve in Urocare leg bags

Yesterday, I thought my Foley was blocked. No urine was going into the leg bag. I was having AD, my bladder was filling and spasming. I finally found someone to change the Foley. After all that, I realized that we'd replaced my leg bag with a new one in the morning, and I'd forgotten to tell the aide to squeeze the valve to open it . That was the problem - urine couldn't enter the bag. Why are the valves shipped closed?

Do these little red valves actually work? I have been using Urocare leg bags for 20+ years and I have always just thrown the red valve because it prevented urine from flowing through. I know it is supposed to prevent backflow but do they actually work and how do you cut them first up?

yes they work, but new they take a little extra pressure the first time or two to get them used to opening, i wear a different bag every morning, so when i clean them, i take them all the way apart, when old I throw the bag away but keep the clamp connector and the red valves, so i have a collection of them now.
new ones i usaully just pull the new one out ad put a usered one in.
and i'll take scissors and make a small cut in them sideways to help them drain, of course if your legs get higher than your waist, expect backflow, and if you're in that position alot, i wouldn't cut them, just squeeze them a few times

Yes, they definitely prevent backup. When I get a new bag I always take it apart and wash it out the night before. I'll take the red valve and stick a sharpened pencil into it and let is stay that way overnight. Put it back together the next morning and never had a problem.

Thanks guys I will definitely give that a go when I have to change leg bags. I have had a couple of explosions in the past with the urodome/condom when I've accidentally tipped backwards. Does it do anything to prevent air coming back up into the urodome/condom as at times now if I bend over I can hear the air in the urodome/condom? It's sort of blows it up.

i haven't had red valve prob in 20 yrs. i did n first 3 yrs of use but they redesigned valve and i learned how to use it. i clean legbag after use, rinse everything and leave all open on bathroom counter. use only cold water, everything air dries. i check each new red valve for drainage. just put some water in it. really haven't even had to do anything but make sure it's open.

had more probs with quad clamp on bottom of leg bag. stupid things are defective half the time.

years and years ago the instruction in the packages said to remove the valve and make sure it opened and closed freely.

I guess they no longer do that?

They work great ( low tech ... one way flow valves) unless you are drinking too much and forget to go to the bathroom and the bag fills and fills ... and then .
