How about the LA area? My boyfriend just got approved for MediCal is looking to line up some specialists - especially a urologist and physiologist to get started with PT and get a scrip for a new chair.

Why does he need a physiologist? Perhaps you mean a physiatrist?

Where in LA? It is a big place. Options would include Casa Colina in Pomona, UCI Irvine, St. Jude in Fullerton, Rancho Los Amigos in Downey, Loma Linda University in Redlands, and Northridge Memorial in the Valley.

Is he only on Medi-Cal or is he also on Medicare?

My permanent address is in LA county and I just wasted a week in the hospital for a nasty UTI and was sent packing with Macrobid which I take twice a day to prevent UTIs. Anyway they told me to see a urologist ASAP and Rancho gave me an appt on 12/31 to get a referral to urology in 2010. I have medical and medicare and need to see a urologist, yet noone wants to see a medi/medi case like me. Any ideas would be welcommed. I go to CSU Monterey Bay for school and am racing back up there this weekend to take my missed midterms from last week. I also have been in the dang ER up north in Monterey some 15 times last semester alone for lovely UTIs...since no dr will see me I have no other options and am also resistant to all drugs save IVs like vanco, gent, etc.

You're right - I meant a physiatrist He's in Culver City, near Venice and Santa Monica.

He has Medi-Cal, and also Medicare, but only the parts that cover hospitalization and prescriptions, not routine medical care.

Is is usually difficult to find a specialist, especially a good one, who is willing to take Medi-Cal?

It can be challenging. He would be strongely advised to pay the premium for Medicare part B as well as there are more physicians who will accept this than just Medi-Cal.

He could try UCLA (ask for Dr. Carol Bennett) for a urologist. Here is a list of physiatrists in CA. You would have to call to find those that will accept Medi-Cal and who are also expert in SCI:

looks like rla hasn't changed a whole lot since 1986. i suggest you pursue your own drs. after 6 months inpatient and more outpatient at rla, i quit. the urologists there insisted i return to my engineering job in diapers. i said, hell, no. had foley ever since.

since I got medicare in '06 I use rancho as a last resort. I got stuck there for nearly 6 months for rehab and was in no hurry to go back there. they told me i needed bladder surgery in '04 when i got hurt...i said what am i a guinea pig? granted I get UTIs ALL the time but life is short and you've gotta enjoy it while you can
