    Condom Cath Question

I've been wearing a condom cath temporarily for the past few days. This is due to the constant leaking after having a Foley in for 2 weeks. What happens is, I feel my bladder full then after 20-30 seconds, I'm leaking. My concern is if my bladder is under enough pressure to push urine out of my urethra, is urine also going back the other way, into my kidneys?! Also, each time I leak it's around 100-150cc.

    Hi,

You don't mention why you had a foley placed in the first place. Was it because urodynamic testing showed you have a high pressure bladder? If so, then you most likely will require clean intermittent cathing (CIC) every 4-6hours or less ideal is a foley catheter. If you experienced leaking, you may need medication such as ditropan/detrol to prevent leaking.
Yes, it is possible that reflux into your kidney could be occurring.

If you have a high pressure bladder, a condom cath is not adequate as it does not adequately drain your bladder-setting you up for UTI's.
I would discuss this with your urologist.

Thank you for the reply. I had a foley in because I injured my sphincter while cathing. I'll discuss this with my Urologist and go back to CIC. Right now I'm taking Detrol LA every 24hrs.
