This thread has some amazingly good humor it it. I am starting to wonder if I am the only person out there who did NOT get a book from Joni? Bummer. Sue, your mention of the hospital chaplin coming brought back memories of my days in hospital. They took me to a Catholic hospital initially and there were two elder nuns (covering both "awake" shifts!) who seemed so far into their senior years that they had little to do besides forcing holy cards on everyone. I was on a Stryker frame (remember those?) and the good sister's kept coming in with fresh holy cards and tape to attach them to the frame over my head. They usually did this when I was on my stomach and for all I knew they could have been festooning the frame with baloons or porn. They even insisted on handing them out to my bed mate, whose name was Mrs. Rosenblume. You would think the name might have given them a clue that the dear woman did not worship at the same altar they did, but they were undeterred. Anyway, back to topic. I know who Joni is, of course, but I don't believe in any of the things she believes in and it would make me upset to think that AB's thought we were all tarred with the same brush.

My mom became paralyzed(non sci) when I was about 5 and someone gave her the book.I guess it was 84-85 and I remember thinking"sure is strange that lady paints with her mouth" when I looked through the pictures, lol.I never imagined I'd fastforward to 06 and be reading the revised version.I actually liked it,read "A Step Forward",then "The God I Love".I ordered the movie too.I was grasping for straws in the beginning to feel good about this disability.I remember her saying "I'd rather be sitting to know God than to walk and not know him @ all".I actually felt closer to Him than I ever did or ever will until I truly thought about her views and reasonings on how/why we get hurt".My interpretation was that God allows these things to save us from the wraths of hell and to see if we will "praise " Him "through the storm",like we're not only being tested but somehow taught a lesson to get us to change for the better.Idk,maybe I got it mixed up,ever the less got turned off.She does do alot of charity work also through her organization"Wheels 4 the World",that's cool.Anyways,I got a letter too although I don't know where it is.It wasn't like yours.Glad many find comfort in her though.I'd still like to go to one of her gimp camps, well maybe.

Oh,I also run into many Christians that try to convince me I could be the next Joni. Not w/ this gutter mouth, dirty mind and the way I view life, lol. We have the chair in common and that's all that matters I guessStupid people!

    Hey Lola,

And yea, I'm behind in my emails. Does JAF have an online grant application or other way to ask for funds? Jerry is a believer and may need some help with renovation costs. Thanks.

Never got the book nor anything from her, but then again, I was injured way before she did. I did however see the movie about her. At that time, she had not gotten to the point where she is now in life. I think it is great that has found a way to cope plus to help others in different ways. However, I think we all, given time, do somehow learn to cope and keep on going. We also find our own way of dealing with what has happened whether religion or something else is involved, it is in the end our own way. (Love that song, "My Way") It is really great that we are given the opportunity to make up our minds which way to choose and how to do it. One thing I do find is helpful is the support and empathy given many times to us when we need it on forums like CC.

As to being interested in listening to her, I think I have found my own way here with the members whom I so far have encountered and gotten the support and help I have needed many times. Not putting her down, mind you, just that I am happy to have found CC and my own personal beliefs plus the blessings I have in my own life.

Eileen, didn't you dread having to be turned in that Stryker Bed? I used to hold my breath whenever they had to turn it. One time, it came loose from the feet and the orderly had to hold on tight so not to drop me and the frame. That was scary. Good thing he worked out and man, he was strong plus good-looking. Heehee. Never forgot him.
