Ms. Wheelchair America
Today's schedule: Service-dog and wheelchair-technology demonstrations, Richmond Marriott, 500 E. Broad St., 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free admission.

Tonight: Crowning of Ms. Wheelchair America, Richmond Marriott. Open to the public beginning at 5:30 p.m. Entry is free, but a program costs $10.

The Ms. Wheelchair of America program is about advocacy, acceptance and overcoming what are in some cases phenomenal odds.

At the Richmond Marriott this week, the 26 state winners have shown their strengths and commitment to improving the lives of people with disabilities.

And through demonstrations of service animals, technology and fitness, they are learning how they can improve their own lives as well.

Valerie Lewis of Norfolk talked and answered contestants' questions about life with her 4-year-old service dog, Timber, a golden retriever.
