    ? about bladder trouble

I was just wondering if someone could tell me what they think i should do.My neurosurgeon sent me to a urologist after i told him i couldn't control the pressure of my urine stream after my sci.The urologist did an ultrasound and said it was 90 and should be about 10(I'm not sure what that means). He said i had lost tone in my bladder and he gave me flow-max to take. I really don't want to take it unless i have too because of the sexual side effects.I know I'm blessed to be able to pee on my on and i really don't have any other problems doing it but it is not as strong as before. So my questions are is that number too high to live with ?

I know i should have asked my doctor but i didn't think about side effects until i got home. Sorry so long thanks for any help !

He is concerned about your residual urine, which is the amount of urine left in your bladder after you void. 10 cc. is about a normal number for someone who is AB, but in someone with SCI we often accept up to 100 cc. as long as it is not causing you UTIs (which it can).

Was this urologist a specialist in SCI or neurologic urology? Did you also have urodynamics? You should have this test as well, not just the bladder ultrasound. Flomax is designed to relax the smooth muscle at the bladder neck (internal sphincter) or prostate, and will not do anything for a spastic external sphincter. Either sphincter not opening correctly can cause a high residual, and only videourodynamics can determine which is causing the problem. On the other hand, if your residual is high due to an enlarged prostate (BPH) it may be the best treatment for you.

The alternative to trying to get your residual down with medications is doing a couple of straight caths daily. You should discuss this option with your urologist, esp. if the Flomax does not work for you (as it often does not in SCI).

Thanks for the info .."Was this urologist a specialist in SCI or neurologic urology?" no "Did you also have urodynamics?" no.I did the flomax for two weeks and you were right it did nothing for me...I have an appointment with the doc next week and i will ask about the other test..I really have not had any problems "yet" with uti or anything but i just know things are different than before.I did want to tell you also thanks for the info you all gave me when i first got on here ,,it helped me so much...I have come a long way fast and sometimes even fell like i need to apologize to people who see me and say "OH I HEARD YOU COULDN'T EVEN WALK"

One more question Do some people with centarl cord syndrome get back bowel control like before or will i always have that problem too?
