Exclamation who's had a hip replacement?

i'm not exactly sure what to ask as far as a poll, so i'd love it if anyone who's had a hip replacement would:

    share their experiences with it
    what type they got
how it worked out for them
    if they like the outcome
what they'd change and/or not change
if it can take weight bearing
anything else you'd like to add

i really appreciate it! i have an appointment friday to consult with an ortho and i want to be as informed as possible. this information of needing a new hip came on suddenly.

    thanks!

Cali, chick had a thread about this a while back, and Wise created a poll for people with SCI and hip problems which may be of some help to you. I'm linking to the thread and attaching an image of the results of the poll.

If you create a poll of your own, you might specify that it's for people with SCI and hip joint problems.

Cali, I am in the process of deciding about hip replacement or getting my hip fuzed. I would ask the ortho specialist about getting your hip fuzed. I am being told that I may need another hip surgery if I get it replaced because it might dislocate again. Look into that. I am debating on what to do. The mobility is less on the fusion of the hip however it wont ever pop out. Just something to think about.

i hope you're taking walking into consideration when you get your procedures done, arod. even if you don't believe in the cure, walking in the braces is proven to be beneficial. don't take that away from yourself if you don't have to. mobility and weight bearing are key factors for me.

i will definitely ask about hip dislocations after a hip replacement. thanks for the input!

anyone who'd had a hip replacement: is there an "experation date" on a hip replacement? i heard plastic ones (which, as far as i know, are old school) needed replaced about every 10 years, but what about titanium? i never heard of experation dates on any hardware as far as plates and rods when it came to fixing a spinal injury.

Oh, I didn't realize you'd been having hip problems that long.

The titanium do last longer and generally don't need replacing. Hip Replacement surgery is big surgery and you won't feel too good for a day or two. But once you get rid of the issues that you are having, I have never had anyone say it wasn't worth it.

Keep us posted on what you learn.

Cali I do ask as the "what if" question about if there is a cure will I be able to walk again... They tell me with the replacement which would be titanium would still allow me to walk again. The fuzion would simply require that you take out the plate they insert. Are you a complete? The reason that you might need it replaced after the initial surgery is because your muscles cannot hold the hip in place because they do not work. This is the problem they told me I would have.

Can someone get a hip replacement if they've had a rod placed into the femur after a broken leg?
