FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., Nov 5, 2002 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- In keeping with the Company's tradition of partnering with its communities, Amerisure Insurance, one of the Nation's largest regional property and casualty insurance groups, has donated $10,000 this year to the PFUND, the Program For Understanding Neurological Diseases. Of the $10,000 contributions, $5,000 was donated in honor of Amerisure's 90th anniversary, celebrated September 12, 2002.

Based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the PFUND is a program within the University of Michigan Health System focused on understanding and treating spinal cord injuries, as well as neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Multiple Sclerosis and Lou Gehrig's Diseases.

"Being a workers' compensation provider, we have seen the affects of spinal cord injuries, both on the injured and on their families," said Richard Russell, Amerisure President and CEO. "Just as we work to prevent workplace accidents before they happen, we also support groups like the PFUND, which are working to discover new treatment options after these injuries occur."

Amerisure has a long history of giving back to its communities, donating both money and employee's volunteer time each year. To date in 2002, Amerisure has donated $250,000 to its preferred charities, which include Junior Achievement, Special Olympics, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan, The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and United Way.

Amerisure policyholder Jim Hiller, owner of Michigan-based supermarket chain Hiller's Markets, began an endowment for the PFUND in 2000, after losing his mother to Lou Gehrig's Disease. "I liked the PFUND because, in addition to their commitment to understanding neurological diseases, they are structured so that one-hundred percent of donations goes toward research," Hiller said. "This means that generous contributions from companies like Amerisure will be maximized, allowing the PFUND to make quicker progress in their search for preventative and curative treatments."

In partnership with Jim Hiller, Amerisure Premier Partner Agency Lubin Schwartz & Goldman Insurance (LS&G) of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, also supports the PFUND. "LS&G is pleased to be on board with Mr. Hiller and Amerisure, in support of the vital work that the PFUND is doing," said Steve Zack, Executive Vice President of LS&G. "We are confident that the PFUND's research will make a significant impact on Lou Gehrig's Disease and other nerve-ending diseases."

According to Director Eva Feldman, M.D., Ph.D., the PFUND has been making solid progress in their understanding of neurological diseases. "Most recently, we discovered the existence of a common cause that crosses over to many different diseases. This type of finding would not be possible without continued donor support," said Feldman. "We are also pleased to announce that a treatment we have been laboratory testing will now be used in a clinical trial for Lou Gehrig's Disease."

"Those who seek to predict the future... might first look to the past. The past is a mirror -- and those who ignore its sometimes dark reflection, are doomed to repeat it... Will it be those seeking redemption who shall decide the future... or will those driven only by greed and envy shape our destiny? Even a hundred years later, the outcome is still very much in doubt. .." Outer Limits(Heart's Desire)
