steve - Gorgeous shot of the aspen grove with really thick old trees. Why isn't there smaller aspens or other trees competing with them there. That is what amazes me.

While you were changing your altitude and getting to 10000 ft, I was stuck at 6200 ft on lake tahoe. Started paddling a tandem kayak at 3 am with no moon with grand ideas of circumnavigating the lake shore. The wind report was wrong, We immediately started fighting a 8 knot headwind which turned into 15 knots with gusts - ended up a good 6 hour paddle in scary cold condition. I was totally underdressed to be doused with 50 degree blowing water- we both got seriousl cold in the middle of summer. We got the tandem and oursellves back to the put in in one piece, which in itself was a hard effort. Ended up with 20.5 miles. Went to a casino restaurant for a well deserved coffee and breakfast.

    Well since you ask............
Each aspen grove is a single organism - as they change color in patches, you can see which one & how big they are - we have TONS of elk & they eat aspen shoots - there are other areas around (burns usually) that are really rockin' with new growth - also why they are commonly a similar size.
Also, the copious leaves conspire to make the soil very acidic, reducing competion and just drowning plants in general but for a few, like goldenpea there, or often bracken.
Sometimes you get big pines mixed in, but my bet is on the fact that they grew in tandem with the grove..........plant geek, here.......check out this golden columbine......

Good call on the wind, 13 knots in my get-off-the-water call on small watercraft - starts to whitecap pretty heavy & get sketchy.........spring boatin'!

Steve, your grove photo caught my eye as well. Beautiful shot and perfect perspective for the subject. Then, I saw the columbine. Wow!

I have only thought about a workout today....haven't actually done anything. A rare moment of lethargy for me. I'll get movin' soon.

Steve Great pictures and an interesting dialog on the tree size. Some times life is pretty dang good, and nice to look at to.

Arndog I guess you know that freezing is no fun, and I'm pretty sure that drowning is not much better,, please be careful. I've always thrown caution to the wind, but look where that got me, and a lot of the rest of us.

And speaking of a beautiful world, just got back from the Tour de Frons. Rode up into the Siskiyou national forest, 32 miles with about a 1000 foot elevation gain. Meet up with two old guys on trikes with electric motor assists, who saved me from my self induced hypoxia riding. It sure is comforting to see that one can still do this level of activity when old with just a little help from a battery.
