Luxury Ski Condo to be Raffled to Fund Spinal Cord Research; Gateway to a Cure Believes Cure for Spinal Cord Injury is Within Reach
ST. LOUIS, July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The raffle of a dream ski lodge in Breckenridge, Colorado will bring medical research one step closer to realizing the dream of finding a cure for spinal cord injury. Gateway to a Cure, a St. Louis-based non-profit dedicated to raising public awareness and financial support for spinal cord injury nationwide, is sponsoring the raffle.
The luxury ski condominium, valued at more than $325,000, is part of Mountain Thunder Lodge, a premier mountain community by Vail Resorts Development Company. Other prizes to be raffled off include 14 deluxe Colorado ski vacation packages and $60,000 in gift certificates to national outdoor equipment retailers.
Proceeds will support spinal cord research at Washington University under the direction of Dr. John McDonald, one of the nation's leading researchers in the field of spinal cord injury. There are between 250,000 and 400,000 people living with spinal cord injuries in the United States.
Gateway to a Cure was founded in 1994, when Jason Sengheiser was paralyzed after a fall at home. His parents, Lou and Cindy, refused to give up hope that their son would walk again, and immediately turned their focus to raising money for spinal cord research. After sponsoring successful local sports tournaments to raise funds, they quickly expanded into a full-time non-profit organization.
Today, Gateway to a Cure has established a number of non-traditional fundraising programs and giveaways nationwide to support spinal cord research. To date, those efforts have generated more than two million dollars.
"My son was an avid skier before he was paralyzed, and our family holds a special place in our hearts for the ski slopes of Colorado," says Lou Sengheiser, founder of Gateway to a Cure. "When it came time to choose our next raffle, we wanted to give back to the ski community, which has supported our efforts for years."
The Breckenridge ski condo to be raffled off includes: a king-sized master bedroom; full kitchen with appliances; living and dining room area with television, VCR and high-speed Internet connections; fireplace and private balcony; and designer furniture. Amenities of Mountain Thunder Lodge include: heated underground parking; heated outdoor pool; climate-controlled decks; three outdoor hot tubs; pool house with showers and storage; state-of-the-art exercise and laundry facilities; private ski lockers; and a 900 square-foot lounge with a gaming/entertainment area.
Tickets are $150 each, and only 10,000 will be sold nationwide as part of the fundraiser. Tickets may be purchased by calling Gateway to a Cure toll-free at 1.877.722.2873, or by visiting the organization's secure Web site, www.gatewaytoacure.org . The drawing will take place once all 10,000 tickets are sold.
"Our organization is built on two-way giving," says Sengheiser. "Win or lose, raffle participants know, more importantly, that their contributions may help cure hundreds of thousands of Americans with spinal cord injuries. I know that, together, we will find a cure for spinal cord injury."
St. Louis-based Gateway to a Cure is a registered 501 (c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to raising public awareness and financial support for spinal cord injury research. Gateway to a Cure advocates accessibility and opportunity for people with spinal cord injury, and provides support and education for SCI families. Tickets are available on-line at www.gatewaytoacure.org, or by calling Gateway to a Cure at 314.544.2410.
