I recently talked with various doctors from Europe. They are skeptical about the Fornai study. By the the way, this news article misrepresents that published study. It claimed that the study involved 16 patients. A total of 44 patients were randomized to lithium+riluzole and riluzole alone. In the latter group, 29% died within the 15-month period and the survivors showed a statistically significant decline in motor scores. In the former lithium-treated group, none died and the decline in motor scores were not statistically significant. The suggestion that the study was not sufficiently powered (i.e. too few patients) is simply wrong. It is statistically highly significant. Here is the paper for people to judge for themselves.
