MONDAY, Oct. 13 (HealthDay News) -- Delivering neural stem cells less invasively by lumbar puncture rather than by direct injection into the injury site is neuroprotective and allows recovery of some function in a rat model of spinal cord injury, according to research published in the October issue of the Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine.

Birgit Neuhuber, Ph.D., and colleagues from Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, induced a thoracic contusion injury in rats. Nine days later, they transplanted rat embryonic neural precursor cells into the injury either intrathecally at the lumbar region (lumbar puncture) or injected them directly.
