I'm also a C5-6 (post ten years); my bowel program is also every other day.
In my experience: diet, stress level, depression all affects the bowel program.

What helped me avoiding accidents through all these years; regular range of motion every morning and night (usually an hour), magic bullet and when sitting on the toilet I place my hands right under the belly (on each side of the hip bones and lean forward-so it presses the intestines) yoga massage.
In time he will have more sensation of his bowels and feel a lot more confident. Also, just to be on safe side I'd wear an adult diaper. Hope it helps.
