Thread: HFCS: You "Gotta" Love It

  1. #11
As Nikki mentioned, HFCS is also linked to the epidemic in obesity due to its effects on hormones that stimulate and suppress appetite. I avoid the stuff as much as possible. It can be in anything including things that one wouldn't really think of as sweet, like salty crackers and wheat bread.

Fast Food Restaurants Food Containing HFCS

The list below currently includes items containing High Fructose Corn Syrup from the following fast food restaurants: Arby's, Blimpie, Burger King, Chick-fil-a, Dairy Queen, Jack in the Box, KFC, McDonald's, Subway, Taco Bell, and Whataburger. More will be added as the data is collected.

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is corn syrup that has been modified to increase the level of fructose. It has become a popular topic in the discussion of obesity in America. The reason for this is that HFCS comsumption has increased dramatically since the 1970s when it was developed and so has obesity. It has not been proven that there is a link, but the average American consumed 39 pounds of HFCS in 1980 and 62.6 pounds in 2001.

I think it's in everything we eat. We're killing ourslves, our kids.

Which is why I take so much damn time creating a list of foods that are "safe" to eat. Corn Flakes? Really? Do we truly need HFCS in damn Corn Flakes??? All my old favs.. Rice Krispies, Corn Flakes, Special K.. I loved these. Too much sugar based cereal simply upset my stomach. Now? Cheerios, and then I have to go week by week. I have found good "all natural" cereals in stores that typically carry almost all organic products.. and a week later, it is filled with new ingredients.

I have a doctor that instantly prescribed me synthetic thyroid supplement upon finding my TSH level a little high. 75 mcg. Typical for my age and being "early onset menopause" (basically) would have been 25-50 mcg. And my chances of getting breast cancer and other "side effects" would increase with this bit of happiness. No alternate choices offered, no explanation of what or why.. just "take this pill." It is a progressive, lifelong solution. The pharmers make out like bandits. My chances of finding the true problem and fixing it? Mmm.. not great odds. Was I offered this chance? Nope. When I grabbed it myself? I was told I had no chance of success, but sure- go ahead and try.

HFCS is but the tip of a huge iceberg of capitalism gone wrong. Just as with any idea, open the extremes and it just... goes wrong. Al I want are for my choices to remain. HFCS is one of many that enables others to destroy choice.

Nikki, forgive my selective chop/quote of your post but the tail end resonates so with my major concern/obsession.

"Tip of the iceberg...etc." is dead on. And "...open the extremities and..." watch the externalities proliferate. With externality designating (in corporate speak) any cost for an anticipated or completed action that some other entity or group or person can be made to pay for - we have the fiasco in Iraq.

Remember the flap about VP Dick Cheney's involvement with Halliburton? Well how do you think Halliburton anticipated securing oil ventures in Iraq before the "war"? Why by arranging an 'externality' of a military invasion and occupation - by the U.S. armed forces. Where was the cost laid off to for this externality? Why to the federal budget of our republic, which means to you and me and future generations. Just 'business as usual' in the good 'ol' U.S. of A..

Check the number of corporations garnering fines in an average year; literally hundreds are fined many hundreds of millions of $$$. But the impact of the level of the fines is a joke to these rogue entities which profited many times the fines by the environmental, etc. violations they were fined for. The corporations are basically criminal in nature and the fines are so light because, well, just how hard to you want to rock a boat in which you've been floating along so profitably for so long anyway? It has developed into standard practice for the honchos of the regulatory agencies, upon retiring from their government jobs, to be immediately hired into much more lucrative positions in the very industries they were supposedly regulating.

What's needed are fines that are commensurate with the violations for which they are levied and new, severe legislation restricting the detrimental activities and practices of the corporate entities. There is nothing written in stone about the existence or permanence of the corporations. We created and enabled them and we maintain them - and enlightened and united we can use our rights as citizens to bring them to heel.

I'm sure glad you posted about hfcs Juke!
It takes me twice as long at the store, but it's worth it.
