Hi - here's how to enable private messages:

At the top left, click "User CP"
Under settings and options at the left, click "Edit Options"
Under Private Messaging check (click) "Enable Private Messaging"

There are also some choices about whether you want the forum (not the member) to send you an automatic email when you have a new message, or have a pop-up window, etc. You can also choose to allow any member to send you a pm (I do that myself) or only selected people.

You might perhaps ask a moderator to remove your private details from the visitor messages if you are concerned (I would do that personally).
