Novel Salamander Robot Crawls Its Way Up The Evolutionary Ladder

ScienceDaily (Mar. 9, 2007) — A group of European researchers has developed a spinal cord model of the salamander and implemented it in a novel amphibious salamander-like robot. The robot changes its speed and gait in response to simple electrical signals, suggesting that the distributed neural system in the spinal cord holds the key to vertebrates' complex locomotor capabilities.

In a paper appearing in the journal Science, scientists from the EPFL in Switzerland and the INSERM research center/University of Bordeaux in France introduce their robot, Salamandra Robotica. This four-legged yellow creature reveals a great deal about the evolution of vertebrate locomotion. It's also a vivid demonstration that robots can be used to test and verify biological concepts, and that very often nature herself offers ideal solutions for robotics design.

The researchers used a numerical model of the salamander's spinal cord to explore three fundamental issues related to this vertebrate's movement: what were the changes in the spinal cord that made it possible to evolve from aquatic to terrestrial locomotion? How are the limb and axial movements coordinated? And how is a simple electrical signal from the brain stem translated by the spinal cord into a change in gait?

Each year, I raise money for spinal cord injury research in the hope that one day I’ll kick this wheel chair to the curb and dance again. My belief grows stronger each day that we are on the cusp of a viable treatment for our injuries.

Training has started for this year’s Rock N Roll marathon. Last year I completed the half marathon (13.1 miles) in less than 4 hours. Not bad for pushing a 50 pound wheel chair “uphill in both directions.” Together we raised more than $6,000. Thank you for your generous support.

I plan to take it a step further. Two actually. Not only will I be faster this year, I have committed to crossing the finish line ON MY FEET! This will be one of the most satifying days I’ve had since my injury.

After last year’s event I discovered trace movements in my legs. With good fortune and hard work, I’ve turned that movement into something usable. I am training right now to be able to walk those 2 beautiful steps on my own power with a walker. Coming on the heels of a 13.1 mile half marathon, this will be quite a test of my focus and determination. I think of the research and the fundraising as a marathon too; nothing’s going to happen in a sprint but with focus, determination, hard work and luck, we WILL see our treatment.

You were so generous in your support last year; I hope you’ll be able to support us this year too. We also hope to have a lot of cheerleaders along the course, so please come out and wave a sign and cheer your head off. You’ll also find Team Walk N Roll on facebook.
So anyone know anyway to cover it, make it heal faster or something?? It happened Friday morning and has grown progressively darker. I have a presentation tomorrow and this sucks. It's hard enough to get up in front of people you don't know at times, now I come complete with a wheelchair and a shiner. Nice....
It is mainly my eyelid not as bad underneath thank goodness. I need Kristi's makeup artistry I think. But I don't wear a lot of makeup so I don't know how to do that without looking like a clown.
Anyone have a magic solution?

It's really pathetic but this is the first thing I have been excited about in a long time. Even though the first movie wasn't that great, I re-watched it last night in order to prepare to see New Moon today :D

Anyway, I could hold her pretty good from birth to say 4 mos.
Then she started wiggling too much and was strong.
So Shanah (mom) stayed right next to us.

Yesterday for the 1st time she came up to me and squeezed between the foot rests wanting me to pick her up and hold her.
How do you get a 14 month old child up in your lap and then hold them good enough not to fall off?
I don't have but 6" on my legs for her to sit on.
Big belly and short, short legs. I'm 5'2"

I thought about driving up sideways to the coach, but she'd have to climb up 12" at lest over my arm rest. I can't hold on to her to keep her from falling. Thought about a 3' stool but she'd fall even furthur to the cement floor.

How do ya'll handle this?

thanks!

Blood is spewing everywhere and my wife jumps up out of bed and asks if I'm okay.....I'm laying on the floor covered in blood, what do you think!! I split my head open right above my eyebrow, looks like I 'should' get stitched, but I hate hospitals so I'm gonna irrigate it and make sure it's clean and then butterfly it up for now and see how it is later today.

This is an enhanced Shadybrook Farm Bird, which I use often and are pretty good without brining.

Royal Oak with 3 chunks of Apple

Normal set up of 2 firebricks

Covered with foil

Put the bird on

Then lit the WSM with the hose torch. Then left all vents open 100% until the dome temp hit 200º, then shut the bottom three down 75%.

Didn't touch it again for 6 hours until the breast hit 160º. The weather was perfect, high 50's and no wind!

Cut up the bird and into the freezer overnight and will be vacuum sealed today.

His work may have far reaching implications for spinal cord injury.
Chronic Cerebrospinal venous insufficiency is a narrowing of the main veins.

Hi everyone, I've applied for funding for a FES stimulator for my legs. I was told this was a really good one, it also has a massage function.

Anyone used anything else they'd like to recommend? Pros + Cons is appreciated.
