Here you have it:

I would have had it showing it doing active cycling, but my mom isn't mechanically savvy and didn't have it on while she taped it. But you get the jist of it.

Nice going. I didn't think I was going to make it to the end of the video because of the music.

My quick take: I love Badfinger as much as the next 40-something (and it's nice to know that 20-somethings are still listening to them too) but I would much have preferred to hear you talk about what you're doing and why. The music is a distraction here. Your narrative is what matters. You have to tell the viewer what you're doing and why.

The video looks like it was shot in a cave. Better (i.e., more) lighting would have gone a long way to improving the look of this. And why go headless? It would have been nice to see the sweet-looking face attached to the FES-riding body.

well, i do see what you mean about narration, and i was going to, but i figured, eh, i'll just explain it in the about section.

as for the lack of face, my mom isn't good with the camera. also, i don't have a video recorder, i just have the video section of my digital camera...which doesn't adjust for lack of light and doesn't have zoom.

i do see what you mean and i definitely agree. although i've been having minor issues with the fetish devos (them asking for pics of body parts) i know that they know my face from my other videos. but for some reason, i felt comfort in my mom's neglect to put my face in the video. i didn't specify to her to get my face in, rather just what i was doing at the time, which was all the lower half of my body. i like the feeling of anonimity in the video, though like i said, it wasn't intentional.

Hi,

Good video thanks.

Just a quick question, did you only put electrodes on your quads and hams, or did you have some on your glutes as well?

The reason I ask is I am still (I am the king of procrastination!) building my own FES bike and currently I am planning to use 6 channels (quad, ham, glute). So was intersted to see if you can get away with just quad and ham (4 channels)?

John Deere Baby!

Should of had 'Chariots Of Fire' playing when your legs started moving. That would've been great.

Good vid.

Great Video, thanks for posting. I liked it, it showed the setup and what all is involved, it would be great for someone new to or thinking about FES to see this.

Your legs are looking great, isnt is amazing how they build up so much using FES? I find I have to be careful not to use mine too much as my legs get so muscle bound they get heavy and it makes transfers harder.

you definitely look like you're in great shape! No quad belly? Do you have any ab muscles? It looks like you are able to sit yourself up or were you pushing up with your arms?

Ok, yeah the music was offputting (sorry :o ), and my chances of using FES are slim. But I liked your video...and WOAH! I didn't know you had loads of fab videos of you talking about stuff!
I like those a lot! It's weird hearing you speak, Cali. You didn't sound how I imagined (no one ever does, though, do they?). :applaud:
Anway, I just watched a few of your videos, and I'm gonna check others out tomorrow. :thumb:

i have a small quad belly, but i use the e-stim unit on it, so it's slimming down more.

i don't have any active ab muscles except for the very top part under the breasts and about 3 inches down. that could be pectoral muscle though, i'm not quite sure.

i was pushing up with my arms and i also use my back muscles to lift.

here's me starting to ride the bike at about 30 pounds heavier. It really helped me lose weight. Among about 1000 other positives. It's decent footage but someone's hijacked the video and is using it for something, i'm not even really sure what. But it's good of the bike and rider.

quick question, are those electrodes re usable? Or disposable. And we're can you get them. Thanks

cali
03-11-2008, 01:59 AM
they are reusable, but they are made to last only a month (but i find that if you wet them and stick them back on their plastic they'll last a little longer, but it only works once) so i can get about two months out of each set. when i got the bike through kennedy kreiger, they came with pads, i forget how many, i'm guessing 12 sets. i got it march 18th of last year, and i've yet to need to order pads.

i'd say you'd have to contact the company of the bike and ask them about it and see if insurance covers them.

*i keep them in a zip top ziploc bag in a ziploc container along with the tea towels i use for my calves. i use the towels on the inside because when i contract, my knees tend to kick inwards and smack off the bar in the center. i've actually cut my knee during a bad spasm in the active cycle. so yeah, so i have it wrapped in the center with an ace bandage.:p

I watched the "crotch" video today - it was quality! You talk really well, and entertainingly. I love your accent, too.
The bit at the end of this video totally cracked me up! :rotfl:

heh, no problem. glad you liked it! yeah my parents tease me for my accent because kids my age usually aren't thick like me or don't have the accent at all. My grandparents have a thick pennsylvania dutch accent, so i blame them. :p not that i'm complaining.

Hi Cali,

Thanks for the video. I'm just getting finished this morning with my stim and I was encouraged by your work to try and move my feet as the stim nuked my thigh and it worked!

Both feet are moving back and forth! Minus the spasms it looks good!

My 5yr/old said, "Dad, your leg is jumping around!"

You should have used Eye of the Tiger or Man in Motion for your FES video.

What e-stim unit are you using?

it's an Empi neuromuscular stimulator 300 pv

my medicare paid for it refurbished. it came with new leads and pads plus a rechargable battery component you plug in the outlet.

that's sweet! so glad to hear you had movement! yeah i took notice that the stim goes down into the feet as well, it keeps your calf tight the whole time; at least that's what it did for me.

karl, i didn't even think of eye of the tiger! dammit! ah well. i can always edit it.

Thanks for posting that Cali. Ironically I just started in the same unit at pt today. Now that I don;t have to depend on otheres for rides I hope to start using it regularly. SOOO much easier than having to transfer on/off the older model I had used!

i can move my fingers on my right hand, but not nearly as well as on my left. as a result, which you can see, i'm pretty much left handed now. damn my abysmal right hand! ah well, in due time. the knuckle on the right hand thumb is starting to bend a little now, so that's a plus.

There are two different kinds. The one with and without the electrodes. Can you build muscle with the one without?

i'm not sure, but it would help your range of motion, and the passive cyclyling definitely has potential to ease spasms, even if it is for a short period of time.

is that as fast as it pedals? Or what is active cycling?

no it goes up to 50 rpms, that was just the warm upphase to get your legs slowly going into speed without spazzing, then the active cycling is the stimming part, that lasts an hour, and then you get a 2 minute cool down where the stim stops and it slows to a stop.

Man I am thinking about getting one. My spasms are okay. I would just like it to move my legs and whatnot. How long have you had yours? Do you find it beneficial? Will it help with muscle atrophy?? That would be the main purpose of me getting 1.

well they are hefty in price, my little stock broker ;)

mine was 15,000, i've had it for a year come the 18th. i found it very very beneficial for a few reasons:

-it helps get good cardio
-it helped with muscle mass, which aided in prevention of pressure sores on my bum (with careful checking and repositioning, of course)
-i actually can feel my legs trying to move when i try to squeeze my muscles, and i even have trace movement that i can feel. keep in mind that every injury is different and you might get more or less of a result.
-it also helps me feel like i'm doing something good for myself, which i am, but i think it's a good mental boost as well to help you keep motivated in general, but that's just me. i wear headphones and get in my zone. or i watch tvv.

for me, the quote i have on my posts rings true: life is about trying things to see if they work (i don't know if i wrote it word for word, but you get my point) and with the bike, i've figured out how to hook myself up that works best for me as far as the pattern i set up and what i use to help keep my feet in place.

so in my opinion, if you can afford it, get it, even if you're doing just passive cycling.
