Boy Sets Fire By Playing With Matches

2003GLOVERSVILLE, N.Y. -- A disabled Vietnam veteran is being hailed as a hero for crawling into a burning bedroom to rescue a child.
It happened Wednesday at David Young's home in Gloversville, N.Y. Authorities said the 2-year-old son of Young's roommate started the fire by playing with matches.
Young said he heard the boy screaming from an upstairs bedroom and used his walker to get to the second floor. He lost his grip on the walker in the smoke-filled hallway and crawled to the boy's bedroom.
He found the boy overcome by smoke and dragged him from the room. They made it safely downstairs, where Young called for help. Both were treated for smoke inhalation.
Young is retired after suffering two strokes. He sometimes uses a wheelchair to get around.
He said his 15 months in Vietnam didn't frighten him as much as Wednesday's rescue.
