Party - but play it safe

By Philip Lee-Shanok
Â*Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences Centre is urging Toronto's teens to remember that partying can be hazardous to your health.

"We know some kids are going to get drunk and experiment with drugs," said Joanne Banfield of the hospital's office for trauma injury prevention. "We're just saying if you do drink -- take that extra second and make smart choices that will keep you from harm."

Banfield runs PARTY (Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth). Yesterday, the 17-year-old program began posting stories of young people with head and spinal injuries on its Web site: www.partyprogram.com (http://www.partyprogram.com).
"It's good for the injury survivor to share their stories about living with spinal cord injuries," said Banfield, who also hosts bi-weekly "scared straight" visits to the hospital's trauma centre.
