Spinal injuries - most aged 18-35

On average, one person a week sustains a spinal cord injury in Ireland, with most of these under the age of 35, Spinal Injuries Ireland (SII) has said.

It has just launched the first ever Irish handbook designed to assist all those living with a spinal cord injury.

According to SII, which is based at the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) in Dublin, most spinal cord injuries happen to people aged 18-35 and 70% of those who sustain such an injury are unable to return to work.

Road accidents are one of the highest causes of spinal cord injuries in Ireland. However they can also come about as a result of other types of accidents, such as in sport, or as the result of an illness.

The handbook was developed after 18 months of research. According to SII, it aims ‘to make a real difference to all those who have been permanently altered through spinal injury’.

The 270-page book covers all aspects of living with a spinal cord injury, with specific relevance to those living in Ireland. It includes issues that are often not discussed, such as the emotional impact of the injury on the individual and their family. Adapting to life in a wheelchair is also covered in detail.

Practical issues such as body care, sexuality, social activities, transport, grants and entitlements are also covered.

The book comes in a CD format for those who have limited hand function. It will be made available to all those who have sustained a spinal injury.
