Gambo Sawaba Wins Karis 2002 Award

Lagos, Jan 02, 2003 (This Day/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- A Renowned Nationalist and a Patriot, Hajia Gambo Sawaba, recently emerged the winner of N500,000 of the Karis 2002 Award. She won the prize for spending a larger part of her life in the fight for the rights, justice and equality of the under privileged members of the society and her unwavering struggle for the empowerment of women in the Northern part of Nigeria.
A Statement by the Media Co-ordinator of the House Hold of God, Ladi Ayodeji, said that the Special Karis Award is a brain child of Rev. Chris Okotie subsumed in the Annual G.R.A.C.E. programme, meaning "God's Riches At Christ Expense", a charity event instituted in 1996 and presented annually to unrecognised Nigerians, who have distinguished themselves in selfless service to their father land.
Subsequently, organisations like Parcelli School for the Blind and Partially Sighted, the Little Saint Orphanage, Spinal Cord Injuries Association of Nigeria and the Orasanya Maternity and Orphanage Home, Benin- City, have variously been beneficiaries of the award.
The statement gave other past recipients of the award as the renowned mathematician, Prof. Chike Obi, Retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Mr. Chris Omoeben, designer of the Nigerian flag, Mr. Taiwo Akinkumi, world boxing title holder, Hogan "Kid" Bassey, veteran labour Leader, Chief Micheal Imoudu, and nationalist and woman activist, Chief (Mrs.) Margaret Ekpo.
Deputy Senate President, Alhaji Ibrahim Mantu, was Special Guest of Honour at the event, while former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Kofoworola Bucknor- Akerele, chaired the occasion, which held at the premises of the Household of God Church, Ikeja.
