Scrooge Steals Wheelchair, But Not Christmas
Accucare Replaces 15-Year-Old's Wheelchair

CLEVELAND -- You've heard of people stealing bicycles, but what about wheelchairs.

According to NewsChannel5, a young girl had her wheelchair stolen and she really can't live without it.

Most kids wish for toys and stuffed animals during this time of the year, but one little girl wants thieves to return her wheelchair.

Katie Hicks, 15, tries to stand on her own, but she can't. Her spinal cancer requires her to rely on a wheelchair.

"It's like what is this a Scrooge here or what," said Sarah Hicks, Katie's grandmother.

WEWS said Sarah said she left the wheelchair on the porch just a few minutes. When she went back, it was gone.

The wheelchair was given to Katie as a Christmas gift last year.

"That's mean isn't it," Katie said. "I don't know how we're gonna get it back."

Sarah said, "I can't believe anybody needed a child-size wheelchair ... disgusting to me."

A couple of Santa's helpers brought Katie a new wheelchair, however.

When WEWS contacted Accucare Medical Equipment in Westlake to see if they could help out.

"We're happy to do it hopefully, we can make her Christmas better," said Cliff Durk, of Accucare.

Now Katie is back on her feet.

The family still hopes those responsible do the right thing and return the wheelchair.
