'I was attacked in my wheelchair' Dec 18 2002

By Richard Crowe

A DISABLED Bracknell woman says she faced a hail of verbal and physical abuse while Christmas shopping in Princess Square.

The 53-year-old, who is wheelchair bound, was looking at necklaces and watches in Argos last Thursday when a woman in her mid 30s began complaining about the wheelchair taking up too much space.

The aggressor insulted her and punched her 73-year-old husband who had stepped in to protect his wife.

The victim, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: "I was left feeling shocked and shaken by this incident and could not quite believe what was happening. As well as being poked and punched myself, my husband took two blows to the stomach after he stood in front of me to protect me.

"I'm a diabetic and don't go out much as it is, so to have something like this happening to me is very upsetting. It makes me very reluctant to venture into town in the near future as this person may still be around."

The victim's husband was "utterly bemused" at what had happened. He added: "If this person was a male I would've had no hesitation in hitting them as to attack someone in a wheelchair is despicable."

The sales manager of Argos Mark Roke said: "We can confirm that CCTV cameras were switched on when this nasty incident took place but unfortunately they do not cover the exact place where it happened."

Police sergeant Juli Read of Bracknell police: "We are aware of this incident and are investigating it, but at this stage there are only sketchy details of exactly what happened."

Witnesses are being asked to contact PC Richard Peek at Bracknell police on 01344 823456 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
