If you know what company they use you can go to the website and send one to their phone from there.

Yahoo messenger will allow you to send text messages through it. Also the web site of your carrier will probably follow you to send text messages through their web site also.
I use Yahoo to do a lot of my text messaging when I am on the computer. They call it sms messaging.

We have a couple of services like that here, all of them charge a small fee per message. just Google SMS message service and I'm sure you will get few responses. you will probably have two join up and also deposit small amount of money in whichever company you choose to go with.
Alternatively get a Bluetooth enabled mobile phone and a Bluetooth adapter for your computer. this way you type your message on the computer and then you get it sent from your own mobile phone. I have found motorola products work very well this way

I use Skype to send text messages from my computer to any mobile. I highly recommend Skype. You can use Skype make voice calls to any telephone in the world for very low prices (i.e. pennies a minute) and to the computer of any logged Skype member for free. In addition, you can use it for private chatting and file-sharing between any Skype members.
What a lot of people don't know is that you can Text message to people where you have entered a mobile telephone number. It is not free (Source (http://www.skype.com/allfeatures/sms/)). For example, I put in about 10 euros into my account last year and have used up less than 10% of it during the past year. Thus, for example, it costs me 7.2 cents to send an SMS message to Hong Kong and 12.9 cents to SMS message somebody in the US.
On Skype, you pay for your calls and text messaging in advance. So, for example, I deposited 10 euros into my account a year ago and have used less than one euro to date. By the way, the reason why Skype (and other programs) charge for SMS is because many companies would abuse the service for advertising. By the way, there are many programs that will boadcast text messages via Skype.
Note that Skype can also receive text messages as well. When you sign up on Skype, you get a phone number. People can send SMS messages to your Skype number from their mobiles.
As Heathquad points out, you use yahoo (Source (http://everywhere.yahoo.com/sms/sendsms)) to send sms text to any individual mobile for free for free although the user will be charged a standard text message by their provider.
Note that SMS messages are limited to 160 characters (about 25 words).

No they want to rip you off by charging you a quarter every time someone sends you three words.
Ok I don't know but I'm dealing with a text problem on my bill right now so I'm annoyed.

Yahoo will allow you to receive text messages but as stated before if the person you're texting doesn't have a plan that allows text messages from other networks they will get charged for every text sent to them.
If AT&T doesn't allow you to receive text messages I don't know true free programs to send and receive text messages on. I have Verizon and through their web site you can send and receive text messages up to what ever your plan is.
