Alpine skiing-Bassis in hospital with serious spinal injury
VAL D'ISERE, France, Dec 13 (Reuters) - Italian skier Patrizia Bassis was taken to hospital in Grenoble with a serious spinal injury on Friday after crashing during a World Cup super-G race in Val d'Isere.
"Patrizia Bassis was reanimated and treated on the spot by the race's medical service," race organisers said in a statement.
"She is suffering from a serious spinal trauma of the seventh vertebra."
The injury may require surgery, organisers added.
Bassis crashed after losing her balance near a gate halfway down the super-G course and remained on the side of the piste for half an hour before being taken down on a sledge.
The 29-year-old was first treated at a specialised medical unit in Val d'Isere before being transferred to Grenoble by helicopter.
