I need help with Google chat

I wanted to chat with a friend but some how I must have downloaded the wrong one. I can get her messages but I can't reply because it says that I have voice Chat or phone Chat. I don't want this kind. How or where do I go to get where we can chat back and forth with her. I downloaded Gmail. What did I do wrong?

Are you trying to chat while in gmail?

Patonb, google talk is the one I downloaded.
Dan then I downloaded that one and still the same. Voice and phone chat. They don't have support to ask questions.

maybe uninstall google talk and start from square 1? idk about this particular program as it's about the only messenger I DON'T have...lol...but typically if I've got an interface problem, that's what i'll do...

Agree about uninstalling google talk. You can chat (typing back and forth) just with gmail.

When I downloaded Gmail it gives me a @gmail address so where the heck do I find that at. LOL

What I posted was a standalone web interface for google chat that involves no downloading...

If you don't have a Gmail account... How you using Google talk/chat?

When you load the Google Talk, it should prompt you for your username and password. You will then log in and see your contact list. Simply doubleclick on the user and you should be able to type to them. Don't click the Send voicemail or Call buttons.

I got mt Gmail account back. So, I will wait until she gets back on line and I will see if it works. Thanks all. I just wanted IM not the dang Vchat or P chat.
