hi computer wizards. you bailed me out last time and i thank you. :) i'll try to explain the best i can. first a box came up saying "Your system has recovered from an serious error". so i think to myself , that sucks. it has came up a couple of times since. now when i'm online looking at something , say e-bay , i get this box that says "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close , We are sorry for any inconvenience". it has 3 boxes to check -bebug - send report-don't send report. i click any of them , it kicks me of the internet with explorer. i try to get back on and i get the problem box. but , i can click on a poker site and get in there. this may sound weird , but it seams to happen after about hour and a half of being online. it i shut down , turn the PC back on i'm good to go for awhile. any ideas. sad but this slow ass PC is only real thing i do. i'm not much for TV.

The send report option will tell you what's hanging. It probably won't mean much to you (or me) but you can Google to get an idea of what it is.

mine was doing the same thing. When I sent in the report it said I had add-ons and to delete them. I have and I dont have the problem anymore.

try going to "RUN" and on the start menu in the "Open" drop down box type %TEMP%. See if there is anything in there and if so delete those files. See if that works.

There is a nifty little freeware called "CCleaner" you can find at www.ccleaner.com (http://www.ccleaner.com) It's free. It won't screw up your computer. It will make your computer run like you just installed everything after a format...well almost... It has a nice registry repair as well. It really fixed a lot of hidden glitches for me and really tuned my puter up. It will also back up the work it does to the registry too in case you want to un-do that. I run it once a month. I'm using Win XP Pro.

Also, try running Spybot Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html). It could be adware. I run it once a month to get rid of a bunch of stuff that builds up. It has always helped me with stuff like that.

what version of internet explorer are you running? current version is IE7. make sure you go to windows update and are current. you also don't say what operating system you are using. if you have XP often a quick fix is to use the system restore feature and set things back to a date previous to when the trouble started. be very cautious running running drive cleaner utilities, especially registry cleaners. they will make some programs, especially any of roxio's media creator programs inoperable.

there are some other ways to try to pin down where your trouble lies. do the upgrade thing first. i'll try to help you.

Hi! I can relate. I am so computer dependent for so much it really screws me up when things go awry. Some questions: What version of IE are you using. Current is 7.0.5730.13 or there abouts. If you aren't there, update. Some websites are designed to the latest IE versions and have problems running on earlier stuff. What are you running for a firewall and antivirus, etc? Are you on cable. DSL, or somethign else? Do you know how much RAM your computer has? You can right click on the My Computer icon, select Properties from the list that opens, and the next box that opens will tell you processor, speed, RAM, etc. Bear with me. I like to know the basics before diving in! I have to be cautious not to write for too long here because I get timed out and when I am forced to sign back in all my carefully constructed words are gone. Last question - Are you familiar with using XP Administrative Tools at all?

Hi Ken. I wrote a really nice reply and it got erased when I was forced to log back in. Some sites allow you to copy and save text but this one won't.

I don't have the energy to rewrite everything so I'll cut to the chase: I would strongly recommend upgrading the RAM on your PC to 1024 MB (1 Gig). I think you're running short because XP needs about half of what you have to run smoothly. Anything you see by the clock in the lower right corner of your screen is also actively running in RAM. A recommended site is crucial.com for great prices and very user friendly, extremely easy to use help to find exactly the right RAM for your PC. - Jimmy

Addition: If you do anything with picture files or audio files more RAM will make things much faster and smoother. I do some PC gaming -don't snicker, GREAT stress relief and dexterity-hand eye co-ordination exercise- and stuff is out there that the MINIMUM requirements for RAM are 1 GB!

This program is really great. I knocked out about 10mb of useless data and my computer does run faster.

Hi Mike. The tricky clean up programs are the registry cleaners. They can wreak havoc with installed programs and undoing the damage is a chore. They may ask if you want to delete a file or not, but if you don't speak fluent geek it's hard to answer with any element of ease. It's always best to do a registry back up manually before using one if it isn't an available option. Much SPAM and malware installs itself in registry so even a cleaner deleting it is only temporary as rebooting reinstalls it. Same with XP's restore function. Files are maintained and many antiviral products don't scan backup files by default. Good practice is to turn restore off, reboot to dump the files, turn it back on again, reboot and set a restore point right off. Those files are also a real memory hog as default setting is like 10% of your drive space.

I've seen the CCleaner program you mention- has a box that sorta looks like an old Tide detergent box. It's rated pretty highly. I used to use Adaware but now the bundled internet security packages are so good many utility programs are no longer necessary. I use one called PestPatrol about once a month and I may find a few things, but many of them actually come on software I installed rather than picked up from the Internet.

A utility program for cleaning all manner of garbage out of your machine and is a program called Evidence Eliminator (evidenceeliminator.com). I bought it back years ago when it was about $40.00. I think it's over $100 now. It will scrub a drive so clean that even forensics can't recover the data. While it's marketed as an uber-security tool for those who may have sensitive content on their computers it is still great for those of us who like to keep a tidy hard drive. If you sell an old PC or deal in used ones it is definitely worth using for the data scrubbing reasons cited above.

well i finally figured out the problem. :( my mother board was going. i was at a porn site watching some women and poof , no computer. :( i tried to put the computer back to how i got it. it made it to about 40% , then blue screen. so i picked up a new tower and i'm good to go. :)

i was on e-bay and found some mother boards. if i buy one , the guy that looked at my PC , said my hard drive should be ok. do you think it would be worth it to have the tower as a spare?

when i was looking for new tower , everything had vista in it. lucky i found one at wal-fart with XP. i talked to 3 or 4 PC guys when i was looking for a tower. they all pretty much said you don't want vista.

Depends on the cost... Having a backup isn't too geeky.

Depends on the cost... Having a backup isn't too geeky.

I always have a back-up computer. As long as I can get online, I can usually fix my main computer. Or at least find out what's wrong with it.

Nothing geeky about it... just common sense. It's not "if" but "when" your computer will fail.

Bob.

Backups can get annoying at times, but well worth it if something happens to your system. About this time last year my work computer crashed while doing a backup, the previous one had been done six months earlier.

It took another two weeks to try to get data off my HD, but never worked. Just think about what you normally do, and wouldn't want to lose, and back it up as often as you need to.
