CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - The state Division of Vocational Rehabilitation has exceeded federal standards in helping people with disabilities find employment in Wyoming, according to a federal report.

The federal Rehabilitation Services Administration recently released its preliminary report evaluating Wyoming's Vocational Rehabilitation program.

In July 2000, RSA implemented new regulations, establishing evaluation standards and performance indicators for Vocational Rehabilitation programs nationwide.

Wyoming's Vocational Rehabilitation program exceeded all the established levels in federal fiscal year 2001 and again in federal fiscal 2002.

"Wyoming's Vocational Rehabilitation program is about helping people with disabilities go to work and become self-sufficient citizens who buy goods and services, rent an apartment or own a home," said Susan Lehman, director of the state Department of Workforce Services. "I attribute the division's high level of service to the dedication and hard work of its employees."

"The majority of people with disabilities want to work," said Gary Child, administrator of the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.

"The Vocational Rehabilitation staff closely works with these individuals to help them reach their employment goals and with employers," Child said.

"Through employment, 727 individuals no longer required public assistance, saving state taxpayers over $1 million in 2002."

In Wyoming's program, 74.8 percent of the people receiving help achieved their employment goals after receiving services in comparison to the federal standard of 55.8 percent.

Each year the Wyoming division helps over 4,000 people. Of those Wyoming clients who have met their employment goal, 96.4 percent became competitively employed, earning at least the minimum wage. The RSA standard is 72.6 percent.

Of those who became competitively employed after receiving services in Wyoming, 73.6 percent have a significant disability in comparison to the RSA standard of 62.4 percent.
