View Full Version : Sore (?) on my foot...
I know this might sound trivial, but I'm quite worried.
It's about a mark on my foot...I don't know if it qualifies as a "sore", as such.
About 2 or 3 weeks ago, I one day noticed a red mark on the toe next to the little toe on my right foot. It's on the top of first joint (nearest the foot).
I thought it was because I'd been wearing trainers a lot (I usually rotate between shoes, boots and trainers), so I started wearing my shoes.
But, this red mark is now a bit worse, and I don't know what to do.
I've been leaving my foot uncovered as much as possible, and wearing sandals, but it's not getting any better.
Just a few minutes ago, I pressed the mark a few times (I've avoided touching it much before), and it doesn't blanch.
Should I be doing anything else?

Make sure your sandal straps are not rubbing there, and that you are not sitting someplace where your toe has pressure (under your desk, or when driving for example). A stage I can take weeks to disappear. If it breaks open or gets "mushy" you will need to see your physician.

Thank you very much, KLD.
I didn't realize this could take weeks to improve. I was panicking because it hadn't cleared up in a few days!
I'm undoing my sandal as much as possible, and only keeping it on properly for transfers. There's definitely no other time the toe has pressure on it.
I'll be sure to see a doctor if the sore worsens. Thanks again. :)

Hi Karen,
If your circulation is as bad as mine in the lower extremities you might want to elevate it a bit if you are just watching tv or some other activity where it could be elevated. Keep the blood flow moving as much as possible. Good luck.
Thanks, Eileen. :)
I have been elevating my leg at times, like when I'm on my couch. Although, I don't get massive swelling if I have my feet down, which is good. Is that a sign of decent cirulation, I wonder?
The sore actually goes purpley with my legs down - probably because my feet go red down too.

I think the fact that you don't get swelling with you legs down just means you don't have a fluid build-up in your tissues (edema), which is a very good thing, but the fact that your legs and feet go purpley and red when they are down is probably a sign of poor circulation. Nothing to worry about, just another one of those little indicators that there aren't any muscles contracting and expanding to keep the blood flow as it would have been pre-injury. Just keep taking good care of yourself :)
Well, I do get some swelling, but it's not very very bad.
Oh...I didn't think the purple/red colouring was a great sign. :o
Thank you for your kind words Eileen. :thumb:

I have a small scar in that spot from the same thing. I kept an eye on it like you are doing and it healed OK.

It's nice to hear things like this. :)
My toe looks better today...it doesn't seem as red as before.

Hope that's all it is .. just red and it goes away soon. Glad to hear it's better today.
That thing is still there on my toe. Despite keeping all pressure off it, it's no better at all.
Should I be worried about this (the lack of improvement), does anyone know?
I think the sore has been there since, uh, mid-December last year.

Any pressure from bed covers? Sometimes one joint can stick up and carry the weight of even light covers.
Many blessings!

Aw, thanks Greta. :)
That's a good suggestion of yours, but I make sure my foot is left out of the bed covers every night.
That's why I'm getting more concerned - I really am keeping all pressure off it, but it's not improving at all. :o

ok, stupid/odd question, but could you have broken that toe & it have not healed correctly internally, thus causing the sore on top and slow healing...
Are you also ensuring you're getting plenty of protein? Although a small sore you still need it for heealing...
Hope this heals up soon Karen. :)

Sorry to hear its not getting better keps
thinking of you and hope it improves
Thank you, guys. :) I appreciate your kind wishes very much.
'Chelle - I really don't think my toe is broken or damaged. I haven't hit it recently, and also, apart from the sore, it seems normal.
I don't know anything about protein, but I think it'd be a good idea for me to learn, as I've read that it's meant to help with healing.

I've found for me, I can;t get enough protein in my regular diet for healing purposes. A lot of meat and eggs may do it, but I don;t eat that much. So when I was healing a sore I used supplements. I just drank boost, since it is what they were giving me in the hospital, but I think there may be some better stuff out there. There have been quite a few threads about it, with some specific recommendations. Somewhere was the number of grams recommended too.
(Search for pressure sore and protein ... you will get enough threads to keep you busy for days! lol)
Thanks for the search tips, sjean. :)
I'm gonna do some reading later when I'm less tired (my eyelids are currently drooping, and it's only 11.12 am here).

I hope your foot is better soon, Keps. I know it's frustrating because it is taking so long to heal, but still keep pressure off of it, okay?
Sending **get better** vibes to your toe and hugs for you.

I have the same thing going on with my heel, I made the mistake of assuming because I can move that leg and foot that I wouldn't have any problems. Now my heel is purple and although I am keeping it elevated, the spot as not changed in 3 weeks. Since the staff at Shepherds had already explained to me that pressure wounds progress from inside out and that by the time I see the red spot the damage is done, I know to expect it to take several weeks to heal.

I've had a red mark on the inside of my ankle bone for a few years. It never fully goes away, but does get lighter. I'm making a conscious effort to keep all pressure off of it now and sleeping on my other side so that foot rests on a pillow with the red mark facing up/nothing touching it. My shoes don't touch it either.
We'll see. It has never been mushy and it turns white when you touch it...(good things???). I have diminished sensation so can still feel it hurt some, esp if I accidently lie on it awhile.
Lol Mem, I like the vibes for my toe. And my hugs. Thank you! ;)
Buffie - eek, I hope you get your foot healed. Your sore sounds more serious than mine. That sucks that you have seen no improvement in three weeks. Is it quite a large are of your heel that is affected?
November - so it's possible for sores to kind of stabilize and stay the same? I've been panicking thinking the longer I have this mark, it can only have more chance of it worsening.
Yeah, it seems if a mark blanches when you press it, that a good sign.
The one on my toe doesn't blanch, unfortunately for me.

I don't know anything for sure! It has actually gotten to be more of a pink since I'm putting all my efforts into not having pressure on it. But, if I were to sleep on it than it would go back to being a dark red fast...but always fades. Feet are so boney it's hard to not have any marks ever.
Just keep off it, even if it doesn't look like it's improving. At least you know then it's not getting worse.

Lol ok, I was just asking. :)
I definitely plan not to put any pressure on my toe. ;)
