This question is for the people that work full time away from home. I have been working for about 9 years now since my accident. I have been feeling down lately and I was thinking of taking a couple of months off from work to get myself back together. I just bought a house upstate where my family lives (hour & half away). I couldn't afford anything close to where. I'm having the place remodled to the way I want it. After I get the place done, I was thinking of taking a couple of months off to spend time with family and friends. I just don't know what I will do about a paycheck.
Is there anyway I can get disability?
Has anyone taken a couple of months off to refresh before?
Spinal cord injury is an automatic qualifier for ssdi, but I'm not too sure how that might work out once you are working post injury...kinda wondering that myself.

I've been off work since December 2nd. I tell you, I had to go off in 2003 for the same ailment (bone infection) and was on suicide watch I went so crazy with nothing to do.
This time is different.
This time I am actually liking that I can wake up without an alarm clock buzzing in my ear. I don't have to 'hurry', get home and get to sleep for the next shift. My gawd I'm making contact with friends that I haven't seen because I'm always too busy working .. this is the life! I'm smelling the roses, as it were.
If you can find a doctor that will sign you off, go for it. I'm covered at work for a year at regular pay on short term disability. I hated the thought of using those benefits and leaving my coworkers in a lurch before .. but you know? I have coworkers that have gone off on stress, a sore back, chest pain ... dammit I'm using it for an actual infection. It's not my fault that they don't hire enough people at work to cover!
Do you have any kind of extended health leave or anything you can use? It's there to be used!

I know where your coming from. I'm looking forward to the extra days off the next couple of weeks.
Before you do anything check everything out. It sounds like you have some asets so you might not quilify for some disabilities. And as far as full disability you said you've worked 9 years. Your short 4 credits, work one more year and you'll have the 40 credits that could quilify you for full disability. And make sure you have enough cash to carry you for a year,

This is the first time I ever heard anything about credits. What does that mean? You said I'm short 4 credits, if I work one more year that will give me 40 credits? 40 credits qualify me for full disability, what do you get for full disability? I don't understand why I don't qualify for disability when you own something. I suppose me renting out the upstairs apartment will also effect me getting a disability check. That just doesn't seem right.
I worked prior to my accident, does that count? Or are you saying it starts after I go off SSI? I did get SSI for the year after my accident and got the 9 month trial period.
Thanks rainman for taking the time to reply to my question.
Happy holidays.

I'm surprised you never got a letter from social security showing you your benifits on amounts you quilify for and it tells you the number of credits and how it works. Go to ssi.org. It will explain it better then I could.
