View Full Version : I'm Not Complaining, But Why Has Nerve Pain Disappeared?

When I was in the hospital and just getting home, I was having some wicked nerve pain. I was taking aroun 1500mg of Neurontin/Gabapentin every day, and one day I started hallucinating from that much, so I cut back to around 900mg per day. Eventually, I just stopped taking it because of the hallucinations, but since then my nerve pain has disappeared. It comes one in a blue moon on the paralysis line, but that's it. I still have hallucinations that are due to the Neurontin/Gabapentin, but they too are rare. Anyone else experience this?

Your body is adapting to your injury.

I was reading your post in another thread, and I find that the fentenyl and percocet DOES help with nerve pain, even thou it isn;t "supposed" to. I use them and lyrica, and while if I miss a dose of lyrica I do notice and increase in nerve pain (so I know the lyrica is doing something), taking percocet for breakthrough pain is effective if it is nerve pain as well. I also find my nerve pain is up on the third day of a patch. Maybe it it sufficient to knock it out. What ever the reason .... :):):):):)

Your body is adapting to your injury. That's why? My nerve pain stopped a few months after being out of the hospital, but I was just wondering why.
sjean, my nerve pain went away before I got on Fentanyl/Percocets. One day it was just gone. I get some nerve pain every now and then, but it's rare. When I do get it though, it's pretty bad. It feels like it's burning/itching/cutting. I can deal with it though :D

Yes, Derek, I'd guess your body is adapting and you're becoming more comfortable. I had similiar experiences. Things used to bother me that no longer do as much, if at all.

Probably not, but you will learn to adapt and use them to your advantage. Are you taking medicine for your spasms? If you're taking meds for spasms, your spasms will likely get more violent when your body is going through withdrawal and needs another dose of medicine.

If you're taking meds for spasms, your spasms will likely get more violent when your body is going through withdrawal and needs another dose of medicine. How would I use them to my advantage  They're embarassing as hell. They ALWAYS happen in my Statistics and Communications class, and they are violent in those classes too. I always take a Baclofen tab a little bit before Statistics starts, but they still happen.
I'm taking 20mg Baclofen tabs 3-4 times a day. I didn't know the spasms'd get worse if I missed a dosage though, thanks :) I started taking my Baclofen again around teh 17th of October. Before that, I ws taking about 50mg of Baclofen a day, and I stopped taking it cold turkey, and I had no negative effects from it. I didn't know Baclofen was so complicated.
adi, sorry about your doctor, maybe you should see another one? My SCI rehabilitation doctor has been excellent from the start. He was trying to find a solution to my back pain, so naturally he gave me a bunch of different meds, but once I asked about Fentanyl, he let me give it a try. He has been persistant on denying me a muscle relaxer though  I used to take Skelaxin, but that did NOTHING. I juse want to try a muscle relaxer, becuase I know a lot of the pain I have is muscle pain, but I guess he doesn't want me on it because I'm taking Baclofen, Percocet 10's, and the 75mcg Fentanyl patch.

- You can use spasms to your advantage by learning how to make them move your leg for you. I use my spasms to position myself in bed, or to help stabilize myself during transfers to higher or lower places, etc.
- I took Baclofen and Zanaflex three times a day for six years. I got tired of being drugged all the time so I quit them. I loved it. My spasms remained consistent and I wasn't drugged to the point of sedating myself three times a day. The one negative thing that came out of my quitting the medicines was developing a Panic Disorder. The medicines kept my anxiety under control for years I suppose and quitting them allowed it to worsen.

I get no feeling out of it, which I'm happy about :)

if your pain returns make note of anything different that you are doing. hopefully it wont return, sometimes you can link it to something, sometimes not.
