ok, so I admit I sometimes catch myself watching "Pimp My Ride" or "Overhaulin". I 'm just curious if they did a "Pimp my chair" what would you wish for?

I would want a custom paintjob with butterflies and wind done in all the colours of the rainbow. Custom 'upholstery' too. And maybe make my powerchair street legal? I really wish they would overhaul my big ass Ford Van!
I watch What Not to Wear and wish they would do a person in a wheelchair.

Emi, you could do this partially with custom spoke guards for your manual chair:
http://www.spokeguardart.com/
(KLD)
I was thinking of making a pimp full-polish TiLite ZR with some fancy wheels similar to the ones on the photo below from Glance Wheels...
Glance Wheels (http://www.glancewheels.com/index.html)
Then again, I really dont want too much attention paid to the chair, and they are heavier than your typical Spinergies detracting from the ultralight chair concept, so I dont know, but it is an idea.

ok, so maybe I'm a newbie. but, exactly what is the functional purpose of spoke guards? I've often wondered this, but never asked. what better time than the present?
Andy- that was the first thing that popped into my head when I saw the picture of that guy's wheels below. "HOW HEAVY THOSE MUST BE!!!!"
keep these coming. I never knew there were options like these out there. I'm kinda like you Andy, I am a simple gal and want my chair to be the last thing you notice about me. ( http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif I doubt that is possible. but, a gurl can wish, eh?) but, I love seeing the options and what other wheelers are doing to pimp their wheels.

I am pretty simple too when it comes to my chair. I opted out of getting the caster wheels that lightup when you roll when I first got my chair. Dont' need the extra attention.. you already get enough being in a chair. A women I was in rehab with got them because her children liked them though.

I once read Larry Flynt "pimped his chair" with $85,000 worth of gold plating. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

I guess to protect your fingers from getting caught in spokes. The only function I've had for them is in Quad Rugby where they are also Mandatory.

This is so funny! When my hubby put neon lights under his car, he put some under my chair! I thought they were fun and my kids love them. When I read this topic I thought, "Hmmm, a 34 yr old mom of two has a pimped-out ride!" My husband has long since gotten rid of his neons and the car for that matter but I've still got mine! They really came in handy last week when we lost power during the hurricane. I was the only one in the house that didn't need a flashlight or candle. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif
I'm trying to post pics of it. They are purple neons to match my purple chair.

november - check out www.sportaid.com (http://www.sportaid.com) They've got lots of different stuff.
Side note - I had these wheels/rims about two years ago. I changed them out because they were extremely flexy. Just my personal experience - I'd try them out first before purchase. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/cool.gif
Oh, and another reason some people use spoke guards is to protect their clothing from dirty wheels, tires, etc. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

November- There X-Cores with some some fancy decaling http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif
Side note-I put these wheels/rims on about three years ago.I changed them because they were less flexy, easier to keep clean and less maintenace than spokes.Just my personal experience-Try everything out first before you purchase. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif

I've got a set of X-Cores too; I wouldn't call them *extremely* flexy, but they're not as stiff as some. If you try a set out, have someone grab one wheel & lift it off the ground by a couple inches or so (you'll feel like they could tip you over sideways http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif). You'll see the flex on the wheel getting all the weight. That being said, I don't feel it's bad. It's just a matter of preference.
Chris used to mountain bike, and so did I, so I understand where he's coming from. There was a mountain bike wheel on the market eight or nine or so years ago with the exact same design as the X-Cores called "Spin" -- while they looked cool, they didn't hold their ground performance-wise to lightweight spoked rims, and for that reason didn't last long on the market.
However, if anyone here uses a WC to give wheels the same caliber of beating as mountain bikers, I'll seriously be in awe.
My long drawn out point: there's nothing the matter w/ using X-Cores on a WC, IMO http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif

I think these new wheels look cooler than the X-cores. might be heavier tho. Karma Carbon Fiber (http://www.sportaid.com/catalog/page27a.shtml?Karma%20Carbon%20Fiber%20Wheelchair% 20Wheels)

I guess I'm just a chair dork. I dunno what is cool and what is not. I know it is totally up to the individual and what makes you "cool" is being confident and all that jazz that yo momma told you. I have the bicycle-type-wheels because that is what was offered to me by the guy who helped me order my first chair. that smuck also measured me wrong and gave me no other options than Quickie. I can bitch 'bout it all I want, but I guess it was a learning experience, eh?
I do like the look of the spox wheels. they kinda have a simple elegance appearance.

JT - yes, the Karma wheels are a better design and sturdier imo.
Scott - Old habits die hard. I still use mntn bike tires on 26" wheels. I'm probably off-road in my chair 2-3 days a week. Haven't bent any wheels but the torque of the push still shows pretty good side flex on every set of rims I've tried. Maybe given that my x-core's were 26" as well may have something to do with my experience.
To each his own. Whatever works. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
