I have just had a micro-decompression and spinal fusion at L4-5-and L5-S1. My doctor is a renown expert in spine surgery. He has developed many of the micro and laser procedures that are being used today. I was fused w/ out screws and plates w/ a bio- engineered product-as I have degenerative disc disease and had alot of damage ( no way to know if my bones where strong enough for the other) plus it reduces the chance of a staff infection- ANYWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been put on Neurontin,300mgs, 3x / day w/ one Effexor XR, 37.5 mgs.at bedtime. I have been told that this helps the Neurontin. Does anyone have any information on this? (The Effexor is NOT being given for depression- it is supposed to make the Neurontin work better.)
Thanks :)

Dear sbff1,
I do know that the neurontin is quite effective for nerve pain. I also take an antidepressant, Cymbalta, but he started me on that first. The Neurontin worked like a dream for my sciatic nerve pain, but it did make me quite drowsy at first. Be extremely careful re: your activities, especially until you know how its going to affect you. I hadn't heard of the Effexor w/Neurontin, but them again why not? They are both SSRIs (Selective Seretonin Reutake Inhibitors) I hope they work well for you! :thumb:
They didn't want to do the L4-5, L5-S1 surgery on me because of the Degenerative Disk Disease!? Hmmm ...
