I've heard several people mention Craigs in Colorado, and I got to wondering...Where did other people get their rehab?
I went to Shriners in Oak Park, Ill.

I stayed in rehab for 3 weeks because I wanted to start my 8th grade year at the same time as my classmates. At the time I was injured, I lived in the town of Dalhart (75 miles nw of amarillo) where healthcare for SCI didn't exsist. So I went to Bivins Rehab in Amarillo.

I was at Magee Rehab, Philadelphia for three weeks. Having to wear a clamshell made it hard to do rehab, so I left. I went into a nursing home rehab for 7 weeks. Then, back to Magee for about 4 weeks.
It was a hard experience.
The physical rehab part was good, though.

The Midlands Centre For Spinal Injuries, Oswestry, Shropshire, England.
From Oct 2004 to March 2005.
My rehab experience was one I am mostly pleased with. I think the centre was excellent at teaching one how to deal with one's new body.
It helped to have fun room mates, too.

I could have been there when you were, but opted to go to Health South in Sunrise. A little closer to home, and no drive on I95, for my husband's visits. I had surgery at JMH, Nov. 03. Both facilities were top notch.

Spaulding Rehab Hospital Boston 7th floor- the most disgusting place in the world- short staffed and had two people in small single rooms- very dirty- i was there for three months the PTs were ok but nothing else.
I did out patient rehab at Rehab Hospital of Cape & Islands- excellent place - I would give them very high grades.

Agree here .... my father in law (91) just spent 3 weeks there for rehab following a broken hip. Excellent care and rehabilition! He also has alzheimers (early stages) and they also handled that well.

Parkwood Hospital Physical Rehabilitation Unit in London Ontario Canada - first kid there - August 1985 until October 31st.
After seeing the post below mine, I had to add that there was only one wing dedicated to rehab. Another wing was dedicated to long term care for people from accidents, strokes etc. The rest of the hosptial was a veteran's hospital ... so you had to watch out for the 'men in orange coats' .. lol. One day one forcefully grabbed my arm while waiting for the elevator and I screamed. As soon as I did though, he snapped out of whatever 'spaced out state' he was in and apologized profusely.
While visiting, my mother recognized the last surviving member of the Don Messer orchestra, who used to come out and listen to me practise piano in the lobby. It was sad. Here he was this big performer from Canada reduced to playing with one hand, pushing his chair with one foot, hooked to a cath bag and he could no longer speak - he had suffered a stroke some years before.

We toured Spaulding Rehab in Boston while our son was in the ICU. Most depressing place on earth, I thought. I cried all the way back to the hospital. No insurance and medicaid would cover it but I couldn't leave my son there. So we came up with the money and flew him to Shepherd in Atlanta. He had no idea how blessed he was until he came home and saw what the local options were. Shepherd was not perfect but we feel blessed to have been able to go there. 3/07-6/07

Rancho Los Amigos. It was hell.
I would venture to say that rehab is almost always "hell", but Rancho is an excellent facility.
I spent 4 months inpatient at Casa Colina and many months after doing outpatient PT there and at the Miami Project.

First off I want to say Hi and "I'm new here and I don't know what I'm doing". I've gotten a lot of info from you guys just searching and reading, so thanks a lot. As for the post. I did my rehab at Craig and it was a great experience. At least as good as an experience like that could be.
Rancho adventures:
I'm crying, in pain. An aide knows I love to read but cannot hold a book. She offers to read to me. While she's reading, the Charge Nurse comes by, tells her to stop reading as the "big baby" has to get used to it.
After a particularly bad night of pain, no sleep, listening to others cry and yell for help, I doze off around 5. At 6 a.m. an aide hits all the lights and tells us to get our "lazy asses" up, then walks away laughing.
We are routinely warned Gang Bangers may try to finish off one of the people they only managed to paralyze. Signs are posted to be on the look-out.
In PT, I realize I've really peed my diaper badly (Rancho uros only allowed me to use diapers, no foley). I go back to nurses station and ask to be changed. They say I couldn't possibly feel if I peed and to go away as it's not time. (As a result of this specific incident where I was left to sit in urine my mother registered a complaint about other incidents, like the first 2 cited above. The Head Nurse instigated an investigation and the Head Dr. brought in a retired expert who examined me for feeling. It was determined I had feeling over 100% of my body, which I already knew.)
Just a glimpse of my life at Rancho Los Diablos (a joke some of us made). I could talk about other things, but enough said. I remember 2 very nice nurses. Many PTs and OTs were summer hires (nice, but highly inexperienced).
I was there 6 months. If this is an excellent facility, I don't want to see what comes in below them on that scale.

HealthSouth Monroeville, PA. 7 months. Very little rehab. Hamot Medical center in Erie, PA (flown to by helicopter) put terrible pressure wounds on my feet. Wanted to cut of some of my toes. Stuck in bed for 7 months. Lost practically every muscle I had.
V.A SCI clinic at Wade Park, Cleveland Ohio. Four months. Rehab total waste of time.
Promised everything, delivered little. Women OT there gave me a broken, used, power wheelchair that they claimed was new. Wrong size and would not go up ramps. Never saw a seating clinic.
The aids there were so terrible that CBS's 60 Minutes TV show reported on how big a mess it was.
