NEW YORK (Reuters) - Verizon Wireless unveiled three new cell phones on Wednesday for the holiday season, including a high-end handset named Voyager that will compete with Apple Inc's iPhone.

The Voyager, made by LG Electronics <066570.KS>, trumps the iPhone by offering faster wireless Web access. But in a nod to the Apple device, which is only available to AT&T Inc subscribers, it has a large touch screen and full Web browser.

This ignores the iPhone's design philosophy - Apple spent over 2 years on the multi-touch UI. Look at Microsoft's Zune music players and see how far they are still behind the iPods in design and simplicity.

It takes a lot of engineering, both in hardware and software, to come up with an elgant solution. It will take other vendors much more than 4 months to replicate the iPhone's design.

For example, just offering 'full web access' means little without details. If it's a usual phone browser, like the Opera browser, it'll be garbage compared to Safari.

Microsoft has the money and the talent but the Zune seems doomed compared to the iPhone. Also, I think Microsoft is having enough problems with Vista (http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9785337-7.html) and they should deal with this issue and then focus on the Zune. $400 seems to me to be a reasonable price for the iPhone, but a college student may be looking for a less expensive cell phone.

People should be able to use third party Apps on their iPhone. It is not illegal to unlock any cell phone that you own. Apple warned its users that an unlocked iPhone and doing the 1.1.1 update could damage the phone. I think it was wrong of Apple to deliberately brick the iPhone with this update! I think an unlocked worldwide iPhone would be huge. T-Mobile will carry the iPhone in Germany in November.

My big issue, as Wise pointed out, is no mouth stick ability. Only allowing one network is annoying, but there are other phones out there that do the same thing.
