View Full Version : Changing to a New System
As I am mulling over purchasing a new computer rather then to throw good money after bad with my existing system, I am concerned about backing up some of my program files. I would love to be able to take the primary hard drive in my present computer and install it in a new system as the primary drive and recapture my data that way. Unfortunately I don't think that I will be able to run my present XP operating system on a new computer. I realize that I could transfer my data files to the new computer, however I have some program files that require reauthorization from in some cases companies that are no longer in business or are reluctant to provide reauthorization. Or in some cases they will tell me that the license is only good for the computer it was purchased for. Any thoughts for overcoming this problem?

You can't...
You're usually stuck reinstalling as everything installs based on your system.... or harddrive/MB serial number.
You can get the products switched, by callling said companies and tell them you're switching.

you can put your own hard drive in your computer and just use the repair option on your Windows XP CD. That way, you don't lose any information, and everything will be just like it was.

I don't think that'd work, would it? Windows OS possibly, but not for installed programs.

From this lowly computer semi-lilterate, what about hooking your old computer into the new via cable(s). Would that not give you access to all the old data/programs in the new system and machine?

I thought that once installed you cannot use that Windows XP in another computer as the license is only valid for the computer that it was originally installed on. Am I correct?

if you got the Windows XP disk with your system that you bought, you can only use a license on one machine at a time

And call M$ for a new activation number.
