View Full Version : Data Recovery Software
One of my kids reformated their hard drive not realizing that they had not backed up some critical data. Is their any data recovery software that can recover data lost in this manner? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I have had good luck with DiskInternals NTFS Recovery (http://www.diskinternals.com/ntfs-recovery/). They also have a FAT version. You can try it for free to see if it can recover your data, but only the commercial version will actually recover the data.

Sorry to hear that. So long as the the OS wasn't reinstalled you should be fine. Any level 1 data recovery software (http://www.cbltech.com/data-recovery/software/) should do the trick. I've used this one, it's very simple interface, shows a listing of files to be recovered and it worked for me.

Unfortunately the operating system was reinstalled. The reformat was done as part of the reinstallation process.

doesn't matter
use this, it's free
as little use of hd as possible until recovery, save on another drive or medium
best to place the drive in a usb enclosure or another computer to retrieve the data to prevent continual write over the disks
don't defrag it either until recovery
A shareware utility called DFSEE might help. www.dfsee.com is the website. It's a very good hard drive utility with great support from the author via a Yahoo group and direct echomail - I'm a registered user because I need the support.
