what's the best free program to turn an avi file into a smaller, perhaps, mpg file? anyone?

Tiff, I have tried to find this type of software for some time and have been unsuccessful. Eventually I purchased Hero software and found it to be totally unacceptable, so don't go near it.

MPG's will almost always get bigger, unless you go with .mp4. I don't know of any free programs that are easy to use that can shrink AVIs, but TMPGEnc (http://www.tmpgenc.net/en/download.html) works for converting .avi's into MPEG-1 streams.

If you want to compress it and are willing to take the time to learn it (crazy program), go for VirtualDub (http://www.virtualdub.org/).

Yha, I wouldn't go that way at all. Mpg is microsoft, and so it's not always able to get played.

.Avi is the way to keep it.

if your intent is to compress the file size to share it, youtube makes things easy. :)

yup. my friend recommended virtualdub too. it looks crazy though.
