This is part of a speech that Bill Gates gave at Harvard graduation where he received his much belated undergraduate degree from the college that he dropped out of to become the richest man in the world. I particularly liked this part

For Melinda and for me, the challenge is the same: how can we do the most good for the greatest number with the resources we have.

During our discussions on this question, Melinda and I read an article about the millions of children who were dying every year in poor countries from diseases that we had long ago made harmless in this country. Measles, malaria, pneumonia, hepatitis B, yellow fever. One disease I had never even heard of, rotavirus, was killing half a million kids each year - none of them in the United States.

We were shocked. We had just assumed that if millions of children were dying and they could be saved, the world would make it a priority to discover and deliver the medicines to save them. But it did not. For under a dollar, there were interventions that could save lives that just weren't being delivered.

If you believe that every life has equal value, it's revolting to learn that some lives are seen as worth saving and others are not. We said to ourselves: "This can't be true. But if it is true, it deserves to be the priority of our giving."

So we began our work in the same way anyone here would begin it. We asked: "How could the world let these children die?"

The answer is simple, and harsh. The market did not reward saving the lives of these children, and governments did not subsidise it. So the children died because their mothers and their fathers had no power in the market and no voice in the system.

America has the highest infant death rates in the developed world.

Why because their "mothers and their fathers had no power in the market and no voice in the system"!* (* Bill Gates from the above citation).

I agree that Bill Gates is an amazing man and the world needs more people like him.

gates is a fake. the man sits on billions just to be ranked as number 1. if i had $50 billion, i'd keep $1 billion and $49 billion would cure 1 disease per year. gates is doing the opposite, keeping $49 billion and sharing $1 billion.

too all you bill gate butt kisses, let me remind you what the gates foundation said when this forum tried to get the gates foundation to help fund a cure.

"sci is not an important enought issue"

oh well lets look away.

Didn't he steal ideas from Apple and got rich by making it his own?

I think Carlos Slim (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Slim_Hel%C3%BA) is now ranked number one for the world's richest man. I don't know if he has any interest in donating to SCI research.

Nobody is obligated to donate a penny to anybody. If they do, good for them.... and good for the receiving party.
My policy is: Don't expect anything from anybody, and you won't be disappointed.

Sure, but Apple (Steve Jobs, et al) stole the idea (GUI) from Xerox before Gates stole the idea from Apple. :)

I like Gates, despite disagreeing with some of Microsoft's business tactics. I also agree with Patonb, Branson is another cool billionaire--Buffett, too. I'd probably most like to hang out with Branson.

Well Adi, I don't personally know any billionaires, I know a few millionaires, and they all have different attitudes about life and people of lesser income. Some are totally cool, and you would never know that they are millionaires, and some act as if they were on the next step on the evolutionary ladder, and I agree with you that only an idiot would think that they are immortals untouchable by injury or disease.
