a friend called last monday said the job he is working on needed someone to run a deere excavator.

took my niece to school wensday then went to the job site. they already had a new guy on the excavator,, the boss ask if i could run a front end loader, ask what he had, it was a little deere 300 backhoe hydro trans, sounds easy enough. he showed me the 300 no a/c or cab just had a shade over the top.

i told him because of my sci, i cant take much heat,,,he said well while your here i would like to see if you can run it,,ok guy puts me on tractor i was expecting all hand controls but after getting in seat notice the hydro was ran by foot control, he went got a grade stick said here push on peddles with this,,i said got no grip maybe if you grey tape stick on my hand,,but then realized i couldnt use loader controls with stick on my hand so he tapes a stick to each floor peddle.

im all set,,, take off to get load of gravel the sticks came lose about the third bump i hit, job site was real ruff, anyway i get gravel come back guy says if i am interested he will weld two steel rods to peddles and put high back seat on tractor and could have it ready in a couple days.....i never ask what pay was, pretty sure running a fe loader aint much, told him i was not interested.

but i really appreciated him & secretary taking time to rig up the tractor and give me a chance

my new job lasted about an hour rigging up handcontrols and 10minutes getting a load of gravel:D

Takes a lot of money to get those courses up here! It must have felt good. Every once in a while I wonder what it would be like to get up on one of my dad's old tractors ... but I'm not trying it. I never worked the fields at 12; too young; but I often went for rides!

Sounds like a great boss. You ought to see if he has any openings in his office. The tractor job worries me. you might be jeopardizing heat exhaustion or a pressure sore.

You're descendant of a great earth-moving dynasty, I figured you'd had lots of opportunities like that! :p

Anyway, how is that different from a tractor? Remember the time I found that the state would modify your tractor, and you said "I drove enough tractors and I don't wanna drive no more."?

I miss driving tractors and combines. I bet that was a good feeling.

Matt & Mike it did feel good to be on a tractor again. would probably still be on the job if tractor had a cab & a/c

Lyniffer, we started way young on here on the dirt "dynasty" lol, i probably had over a thousand hrs under my belt before 12. guess we were kind of lucky dad always had farm & construction equipment around so i have ran about everything.

when i was 4yo dad would take me to work and put me on a little ditch witch trencher with steel tracks. i knew how to start it check gas&oil operate boom forward reverse turn & everything. but when it was trenching you just set there doing nothing,,,took me about ten years to realize why dad had me run trencher,,,perfect baby sitter:D

ac06, the boss picked me up out of pickup truck stumbles says damn your heavier than i thought, he got me about half way on tractor legs spaz he drops legs now im hanging kind of half way finally made it to seat,,,,to put me back in pickup truck he done a transfer i never seen or thought of before, facing each other knees against his belly i grab his neck worked perfect.

coffee, yea the boss was real cool not often you meet someone who will take any time for something like that.

Therainman,,,the way his secretary filled out her wranglers had me considering office work.

Beth it was basically a compact tractor, fly but excavators are flyer:D
