I have Verizon....we have 5 phones total on our plan, 1400 minutes to share, free night & weekend, free in-network, unlimited text, video, picture messaging & wireless web, insurance on all the phones...when all is said & done, including tax, we're just at $200.00. So, yeah, it looks expensive when ya see $200.00...BUT ya divide it between 5 and it's not quite so bad...We've also had service in places where everyone else's phones didn't work and WHEN no-one else's phones worked(ie:hurricane outages)...I've been w/Verizon since 2001 and keep renewing my contract b/c I've been happy with them and I get decent rates for the number of phones I have...I don't know how good it is for only one though...

Sometimes the local carriers offer some better rates. It depends on how much you use the phone (and what features you use)

If you are looking especially for price, and will limit the usage, the pre paid phone plans are a pretty good deal.

prepaid is the way to go if you don't use lots of minutes.

$50 entry fee (phone), $25 every 3 months or 130 minutes, and if you (or your teenager) lose a phone - BFD - $50 for a new one.

That's with long distance and roaming. Teh Awesome.

Don't use if you do lots of text messages or other special features.

I use sprint and it seems to have decent service. I have a company phone so Im not sure on all the prices, but I've been told by others they are pretty reasonable.

BTW..when I had my accident I had to have an attorney to get everything settled with the insurance company. Well my attorney said that my insurance would pay for me to have a cell phone for emergency, but it would only be prepaid. You asked if there was anything available to you b/c you are disabled..depending on the situation you might be entitled to something like that.

If you live in an area where there is Cricket Wireless it is $45 a month for unlimited calling and texts. It is prepay and there are no contracts, so if you don’t like it you can stop at anytime. I switched from Verizon to Cricket, because Verizon’s customer service was so poor! I like it. I think it is only offered in larger cities.

What kind of probs have you had w/Verizon customer service? I've had Verizon since 2001 and never had a prob w/their cust service...(and I've used them MANY times<see 5 lines in post above>) ...Pretty much my only complaint would really be that the store I typically used was alway busy and it never took less than 1 1/2-2 hrs to get tech support in there...BUT that was in the busiest part of Orlando and it was their busiest store in the area...I never went in there when I was short on time, I KNEW it wouldn't be a quick trip...when they added more stores w/tech personnell it got better...I had some billing issues when I was in the hospital and their customer service personnel went out of their way to ensure that the issues were taken care of and my acct was credited the charges that were due me....

I know a LOT of people who use verizon and no-one has had mentionable cust service probs...I'm just curious what kind of probs you've had that would cause you to switch from them...like I said above, I know that I may not be paying the absolute cheapest plan out there but I stay w/verizon b/c of their cust service and service during emergency situations/events....I have had AT&T and Sprint in the past and had severe issues w/them both in the past...bad enough to the point that I'll NEVER go back to either company and I discourage people from using them...

I like the service I get from verizon as well. We have never had any major problems. The minor ones have always been able to be solved over the phone. Right now we have a family plan, 4 phones LOTS of minutes, (not sure exactly how many, but we don;t go over, even with 2 teenage girls, no roaming, free long distance. The free long distance in itself saves us $40 plus on our regular pnone bill. Verizon isn't cheap, which is why I didn't recommend it to the OP. In his case I think the prepaid phones, and being very careful on minutes is the way to go.
