What benefit is there to a man to ever CONSIDER getting married? Kids? You can very easily have kids out of wedlock. Chastity? come on...how many couples actually live by that now, no sex until marriage?

The one reason I could see to get married would be to marry a foriegn chick so I could go to her country and get citizenship and get away from George Bush.
Anyway, most foriegn women are thin compared to American women anyway... The US is getting far too seismic for my tastes...

Marriage is great! You receive the dowry, you get some girl to clean the house and cook you dinner, your sexual depravity is satified by law, not to mention all the ownership benefits. Wow, how could you question marrying some girl?

Jake when I first read your own response I thought you were going to say what my 28 year old nephew always said. Thank God yours was much more intellectually thought provoking than my nephews response would have been. He wants to send for a mail order bride and be treated and waited on hand and foot like from his grandmothers days.

Ukraine girls really knock me out...
There is no good reason to get married. It's a recent ritual in man's history. It is designed to fail. Those that don't fail are either very lucky, or very codependent.

There was a time when marriage symbolized commitment for a lifetime. Divorces were frowned upon by society.
Now the leading candidate for the party of "Values" personally has three divorces. The "born again" movement says, that all I have to do so say "I accept you christ" on a bible (which I've never read) and I can do anything I want.
What would I ever sign a contract which gives another person half of everything I've worked for in my life?
One reason could be a couple of thousand dollar in tax deduction, but then again.
Do you have that in the US? Laws that discriminate singles? We do.

What would I ever sign a contract which gives another person half of everything I've worked for in my life? And continue to pay for kids I have nothing to do with raising.
No reason to get married other than monetary and social status, medical, etc..
On that note, my second daughter, 19, just announced her engagement and wedding plans for this October.
What. Can. I say??

common-law here gives all the rights of marriage. My boyfriend wants to get married and I dont see the point in wasting the money when nothing will change except a piece of paper. I can see getting married for religious reasons but since that doesnt apply to me....He keeps saying it is commitment, but I keep saying if we arent committed now then wtf?

Seems like you also have discrimination laws for singles and unmarried folks then. But as for deduction benefits for children’s that applies married or not.
As for marrying, one at least gets a big party and a bunch of gifts doesn’t one? Maybe the ones marrying several times knows something I don’t :D

Yes, it’s strange, isn’t it.

Thats how I felt before we got married, but strangely enough being married did/does feel like a bigger commitment than just being common-law...it's strange, I can't explain it, but I'm glad we got married, some how it is more, to me, than just a piece of paper - weird.

Why marry? That's up to the two involved in the couple. If it's what they want, who am I to say do it or don't?
BTW, sh0rty, I'd get more time w/my b/f under my wheels before I'd think about marrying him. As you've said, he's been lying and you guys have big trust issues. I wouldn't even think about it until and unless things improve greatly and remain that way.
Here in the great state of Virginia there is no common law marriage and a bunch of twits voted for the Marshell/Newman amendment. This means that there are things that couples cannot do unless they are married. No joint signing of a lease for an apartment, house, car, anything.... Also a partner cannot be covered on insurance or be considere family if the other is in the hospital. I think there are pros and cons to marriage just dpends on your states legistlation.

Because you get half of everything they've worked for too. The idea behind marriage is to build a life TOGETHER. Each partner's accomplishments are built on the foundation of support they receive from their mate.

I think the benefits of marriage change as each person progresses through the stages of their life.

Yeah, this sounds real good..But, one thing...DIVORCE..
As you know all relationships don't last no matter how hard one tries.
If you partner is not giving equally into the relationship it will not
flourish into happly ever after...
I'm a bit jaded with it comes to marriage..:zombie: Done it twice. Never again.
Okay, :) Maybe, never again.

You're preaching to the choir. Both my husband and I have been married once before.
As you know all relationships don't last no matter how hard one tries. If you partner is not giving equally into the relationship it will not
flourish into happly ever after... So? The fact that some relationships end doesn't negate the positive that can come from marriage and my belief that it is worth working for. You can't live life in fear of things like this. Be cautious and take calculated risks, but avoiding any possibility of pain or hardship generally means that one avoids a great deal of fun and happiness too.
I'm a bit jaded with it comes to marriage..:zombie: Done it twice. Never again.
Okay, :) Maybe, never again.Yup. I was fairly certain that I wouldn't get married again because I didn't think it was right to repeat the vows that I had already broken (even though I truly and honestly believe that I did everything within my power to save my first marriage). I thought I could be happy in a longterm relationship without a formal commitment, but over time, that changed. I love the idea of marriage. I really believe in it. Not for everyone. I don't think that society should mandate it, but for me, it feels right and I'm very glad that my husband agrees. :)

I would see shows talking about the % of divorce and blah, blah. I use to say I'll never be in that category, we'll be together forever. Well, I was wrong. I can't say I'll never get married again, but for now I don't see nor do I want it.

I might be misreading you here but not all relationships end. My parents have been married since they were 17 and 19 respectively. They have a beautiful thing going and I look up to that. Maybe it is because of this, but to me, getting married is the completion of the picture. Regardless of how times change, marriage to me will always be an institution. I'm in no rush to do it and I don't feel it is necessary to validate a relationship, but I still know the likelihood of me choosing to marry is high.

My parents had been married 53 very happy years at the time of their deaths. They worked darn hard to have such a happy marriage. I learned a lot from them about what it takes to make a relationship work, and I've used that in my relationship with Debbie. For whatever reason, even though I have pictures of my parents' wedding, their wedding cake topper, and other sentimental mementos from their special day , I never did dream of having a beautiful wedding of my own. Go figure.
