I am considering on switching my phone company to Vonage. It will cost me half of what I am paying now and give me unlimited long distance free, which I have no long distance and all my family is long distance. I was wondering if anybody else has Vonage or heard of it and what is their opinion on it. I do recall there was something in the news about them being sued or something. But I also hear VOIP is the way to go. Any feedback?
Judge In Patent Case Puts Noose Around Vonage's Neck

A judge today barred Vonage from signing up new customers, following the ruling last month that it was infringing on some Verizon patents. According to ZDNet, the judge "said it was the only fair option that would minimize harm to both companies for now." It's hard to see how that's true, though. Clearly the harm on Vonage isn't being minimized, as an inability to sign up new customers will eventually kill the company. Once again, it's hard to see how patents are being used here to promote innovation. It's fairly obvious that Verizon has no interest in settling the case or licensing its patents, but rather it's an entrenched, slow-moving telco that simply wants to shut down its competition rather than compete in the marketplace.

I have it. I got it maybe 4-5 years ago. I rarely have any problem with it. Sound quality is very good. I give it an A-.

Uh oh, I think the writings on the wall now. Funny thing, next month makes 1 year since the IPO for Vonage. Let's see how VG is doing, lol. What is really funny was how they were selling stock to their customers, then when those 'pre-sales' didnt want to pay after the first day of trading, Vonage initially threatened to sue them. Good stuff to watch, caveat emptor!
My son uses it. Has had problem from time to time with voice quality and service.

I don't have them or 1st hand experience, however there have been news reports here of 911 issues with them. If I remember correctly the 911 calls weren't getting routed correctly or the 911 service wasn't available 100% of the time. Just figured I'd pass that along b/c it seemed to be a pretty major problem here...

i have Broadvoice, a less expensive VOIP service. It has great features--all the usual, plus can program tons of speed dials, use traveling from any internet connection--but it's been a nightmare...crashes several times a week,, drops calls, terrible outgoing voice quality. I'm switching to FIOS, with fewer features but I hope more reliability.
However, my friend found a new router solved the crashing problem, and when he learned to program it to prioritize voice--devote more bandwidth--outgoing quality improved. So problems may be a matter of the router, and if Vonage supplies the router maybe they've solved it all.
