30 year T12 Para.... 52 years old....Has this happened to anyone else?
Had 2 Striods shots in both my shoulders in last of April this year....and since seems like i get Diarhea once every 3 to 6 weeks...and since I eat only once a day...after a complete clean out it takes me 3 weeks to have a bowl movement again.... i just use self stimulation with finger for bowl movement....thats always been normal for me. Had maybe diarhea maybe once a year...but since the shots its not like me....and if I eat beef products...I get stomach cramps and sometimes diahea...this has happened after the steriod shots....never gonna do them again...has this happened to anybody else on here...Art
Have my 6 month check up with doc in august 26...so gonna bring it to his attention also.

Art, I have never seen bowel changes related to steroid joint injections. Did you get antibiotics around the same time by any chance? Have you been tested for c.difficile infection of your bowels? This is one of the more common causes of diarrhea or loose stools in those with SCI.
See if you can take a stool specimen with you to your appointment on August 26 and have it tested.

Sci-Nurse,
As you have mentioned earlier I have been tested for C.difficile and they said that I don't have any infections.. But I do get Diarhea quite a lot too.. I use FiberCOn but it doesn't seem to help too much either.. anything else I should try? thanks

OGD, the combination of fibercon and imodium (or their generics) works for some of us. Look at this link Bowel Accidents (http://carecure.org/forum/showpost.php?p=16685)

Thanks MikeC.. I will get immodium today.. One question though.. Does this kind of medicines makes your muscles lazy?. I just don't want to face worse problems in the future.., or does your body get used to this medicine, so that it won't have the same effect in the future?

OGD, I don't think that Immodium makes your muscles lazy. I think that it is laxatives. I'm not sure what the long term effects of taking Immodium are. I went to several web sites and all they talk about is short term stuff like dizziness, nausea, etc. Hopefully if anyone knows of any bad long term effects they'll tell us. Mike

After ruling out C. Difficile everyone should try enzymes and acidopholous to reduce episodes of diarrhea. I faced frequent loose stools in the past but now very rarely have trouble.
Enzymes will help digestion occur earlier... making you much safer. Foods will become bio-available earlier which could mean that the same amount of food will raise your blood glucose levels higher than before. This could cause you to gain weight if you're not careful. But the benefits totally outweigh the risks for me.
I have what I call self-diagnosed IBS. Depending on what is in the pipeline [gut]... certain foods will trigger certain diarrhea. I avoid problems by using enzymes to speed digestion, fibercon to add bulk, loperamide to remove fluid and acidopholous to ensure good bacterial activity. These measures combined open up my dietary landscape ten-fold vs the bland foods I would be eating otherwise.
OTOH... eating foods like bananas, apple sauce, toast, rice, tea and others is always a good idea. Avoiding fatty foods, spicy foods, alcohol, certain fruits and vegetables, etc will help a lot, too.

OGD, hope the immodium had done the trick and cleared up your problem. I'm interested in the nurse's response also about long term effects. Mike

Diarrhea is at least 3 loose stools in 24 hours. Otherwise it is just a loose stool, and more likely to be something you ate.
Most people do not feel ill if they have a c.diff infection of their bowels.

SCI Nurse - as soon as I have a loose stool I take a couple of immodiums. So far (and this has only happened twice in a year) that has stopped me from having any more loose stools. I usually take one immodium a day so these 2 are in addition to that one. After taking 2 immodiums I don't have a BM the next day but then start up again the following day. Do you see anything wrong with taking additional immodium this way? Mike

Mike C:
If you haven't taken antibiotics recently the immodium think is OK but if you develop diarrhea after taking antibiotics it could be the result of a severe infection in your colon and taking immodium could be dangerous in that situation because if you lock up the bacteria in your bowel, they can go to town and cause a lot of trouble.
So be prudent about the immodium.

Thanks SCI Nurse. I haven't taken antibiotics in over 9 months (knock on wood). I'll keep a close watch on the immodium when I take anitbiotics in the future.

Fuentejps....The steroids shots really did not do much for me really....Bextra actually worked better than the shots did...but the bextra botherd my stomach abit and made me bruise easy which i never have bruised in my life...Damm side effects anymore is worse than the help they offer...Bextra was 10 mg once a day...now i just take 400mg of motrin when i get up...and later in the day vicodin es once later in the day. I know the pain in the shoulders is never gonna go away...just need to control it to make it torable is all.
The doc just wanted 2 try it once since it was bothering me so...but just not the thing for me. I just hate taking stuff...got better things to do...lol...Art
